Halo on 2.2-2.5ct RB & WF custom work?

Hi Everyone,

I just came across "Sweetblues" Natalie K setting and I think I''m in love! My question is I''d like to do something similar but with a diamond of 2.2 or 2.5 cts. Do you all think it might be too much on a size 5 finger. I mean how big does a halo make a RB that size overall with the added traps on the side.

The other thing is I''m thinking of having Whiteflash do all of this but I''m not sure what adjustments I would like to make on the setting. I''m thinking I would want this setting done a little lower. So all this leads to me is - do you buy the diamond first & than have the vendor hold it (assuming it''s WF) and than figure out what the heck I want to do with the setting or do I figure this out first & than approach WF on finding an E/F vs2 and than go over the setting adjustments. I don''t care on timing no rush since this is an upgrade so It''s not like I need everything on a certain date.

I swear this Show me the Ring thing is driving me crazy! I almost started to think I wanted a cushion but I had to slap my self to get back on track (lol).

Personally I think that halo''ing a 2.5 diamond is a waste of a good diamond.

This is just my own opinion, but I would only halo a diamond that needed the ''assistance'' of the halo. I think large stones need to stand on their own a bit more and take more of the ''center stage'', that is a huge $$ investment to make in a large stone like that, why cover it up?

Also I think that a stone that large with a halo ends up looking either fake or like a cocktail ring....just my two cents!! I love a good halo but I don''t think stones larger than ~1.5c should really be halo''d...or maybe up to 1.75c with a super super thin one.

Well, this isn''t helping because with this post and Mara''s you just got 50/50 votes against and pro halo setting. I''ve seen any size wearable in halo settings - from half carat to 10 carats and they all seem to make perfect sense. The setting doesn''t cover the stones - most aren''t true bezels anyway, the diamonds are held in prongs over the pve-covered frame below. These are rather classic rings and if you love the style, why not.

Speaking of large halo settings, ''Madroc'' has posted her ex-ring somewhere around here: a 10 carat oval in a halo setting. Now that stone has been upgraded, but the record remains. And the largest rounf diamond posted by White Flash is also a halo setting - 10 carat round brilliant in a guy''s ring! And there''s plenty of other such examples - try the websites of Art of Platinum and Icestore for a couple'' dozen more or so.

IMO, it is as you like it.

On the other hand, I do think that a halo AND traps are too much for a RB of that size. I''ve seen similar (and lovely) settings before both in person and on PS, but not with a center stone that large.

Thanks for the replies. I value all your opinions. I just got off the phone with a friend who told me she tried a "JB Star" ring that she felt looked like a cocktail ring on her finger. So, I guess I'm going to try & stop over at one of the vendors on 47th to try on the Natalie K & see If I like it.

I really, really don't like solitaires & three stones are my weakness so my quest continues. The other PriceScoper ring I love is "Missgotrocks" so that's a strong possiblity as well. Although, of course I'd want to make adjustments to that setting as well.

Sweetblues setting doesn't have the rounds around the traps only around the RB in a square like set but the pic above is similar.

I wear a 5 1/4 ring size and I honestly feel that a 2 ct. with a halo would look like too much.

I am going to chime in here with some of the others and say I too would veto a halo for a RB stone of that size. I have nothing against halos - in fact I think they are very pretty but because of the added diameter I think it would take a beautiful 2-2.5 RB ering and make it look like a cocktail ring. Would it be beautiful? Yes of course it. Would it look like an ering? No, probably more like a dinner or cocktail ring. Again, this is just my opinion and you are certainly on the right track in wanting to go try some of these settings on. As I have stated before, I have seen lots and lots of rings that I love but when I put them on my hand it''s like no way - not on me.

I am flattered to see that you like my ering. It is a three stone ring from PrecisionSet. Just like everyone else, I second guess my stuff all the time too. I am just curious as to what changes you would make - see if it''s anything that tickles my fancy too!!! I went to Tiffany''s recently to look at their solitaire mounting as I have liked Dem''s ring so much. There again not the worst I have seen on my hand but just didn''t do it for me - maybe because of my band. I decided then that I really did like the look of the three stone ring and would probably miss the sidestones if I did away with them. This ring was first purchased for my 2.02 stone and then I upgraded the stone to a 2.22 and had the stone set in the same setting. I sometimes think the sides should have been spread apart a little more for the bigger stone but it is OK. I spoke to a representative of PrecisionSet at a trunk show in December and he said it would be such a minor adjustment that he didn''t know if it would be worth doing. He also said that if that was what I wanted that they would be glad to do it. I hesitate because I know that in redoing something you could end up with other problems that you didn''t think about - issues with prongs, etc.

Good point. I didn't quite think of this - just classic rings in general (if there is such thing).

Also, these framed settings don't stryke me as a strategy meant to enhance the looks of diamonds or make them look larger. Maybe it does work that way, but frankly - before the current flow of pave and halo settings for e-rings, pave became familiar as a classic among art deco and later pieces of jewelry quite over the top. IMO, it just gives a feel of quality sophistication to jewelry - at least when well done. Large diamonds just fit in the picture

These guys didn't shy away from setting diamonds 4 cts and more in pave frames. Among the modern designers, every line made with large diamonds seems to get the pitch. I wonder if this is not enough to make them mainstream.

How about this thing? (3.3 cts)- I looked for Ambar's official presentation, but couldn't find the right pictures. Hope this does it.

Oh, I absolutely agree with the sophistication aspect - it makes a lovely ring. I guess I just don''t think it quite fitting for a young bride. Unless she hails from Hollywood!

I love some of those huge halo''d rings but for me it''s not engagement at all, as I mentioned I feel it''s more cocktail or as MGR noted, dinner or similar. I''d expect to see that kind of large stone and halo setting on an older woman, but that''s just a perception thing IMO....it really depends. I have seen some large halo''d rings on gals here that I really feel they can''t carry off! Just like if I suddenly sported a 5c oval (which I have tried on before), it looked ridiculous on my hand. Do I feel the same way about a 3c round solitaire? No way, because it seemed simpler and more at home on my hand.

So IMO trying things on is a huge positive, you will get a feel for what works and doesn''t work for the hand. Some stuff looks AWESOME on other people and horrible on me. I tried on the Daniel K asscher in the store (with the setting we are all familiar with) and it was SUCH a beautiful ring and it looked just nasty on my hand! I was disturbed and pleased at the same time (aka one grandiose idea down!), but it really underscored that personality thing for me. Kaleigh inspiredDK looks fabulous and the pictures of it on Mrs. S''s hand were beautiful.

Good luck and have fun with the project!!! And I would say if you did decide to do a halo on a stone that size, make the halo as tiny as possible, aka WF''s .008c melee so it would look more like the Tiffany first ring that was posted and the center stone still really shines as the center stage.

What we have here is OVERKILL ... size 5 ring finger? 2.5ct ROUND plus HALO plus TRAPS???? c'mon! This is going to be Viva Las Vegas x 10!

First of all, lose the traps -- it's totally either or on the halo/traps.

Second of all -- I could applaud a halo on that size stone in almost ANY other shape but round. Rounds are so FAT already. That cushion idea of yours sounds dreamy. Town & Country weddings issue is showing a PASSEL full of halo'd cushions in that, or bigger size ranges as their NEXT BIG THING, (besides Marquise and Rose Cuts)

ETA: if you're gonna ask for the ring to be "low set" PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE take into account the wedding ring that will need to fit flush & either have it made at the same time or make sure one can fit with it.

Ok the beauty of where I live is in 10 minutes I got too 47th and although all the shops are mostly closed I did get to see a few halos. Unfortunately, it's not enough to make up my mind as to Halo or not. So, I'm going to try & make some time to see some Halo's next week & take a little trip to Tiffany's next weekend to see some more Halo's.

Maybe I'll be sporting a three stone or maybe a big ole halo with traps...singing "viva las vegas".. either way stay tuned...(lol)!

Oh forgot to add:

MissGetRocks - I would only be changing the setting lower & changing it to platinum & maybe making the edge of it thinner.

The 47th street shops may be closed, but Michael C. Fina, Fortunoff, T&Co, et al are NOT! So you could still check out some settings. (Of course, duh, it''s 7:20 there. SO maybe tomorrow??)

You ought to be able to see some very comparable settings to what we''ve been discussing at Michael C. Fina....and I know that T&Co makes a round version of the legacy which you could at least try on in a big enough carat weight to give you some halo feedback! (At MCFina I tried on the JB Star traps/halo ring your friend referred to. It was not my 1st choice, but was pretty nonetheless!)

I wouldn''t halo anything bigger than 1.5 cts personally. I have a smaller ring size by just a bit about a 4.75 and I tried on a 1ct Tiffany Legacy and thought it looked ginnormous and so did Lmurden''s halo ring looked ginormous too and I think that was a .75 center? Anyway when it comes down to it, its all a matter of personal preference.

It is definitely a matter of personal taste. Look, I have a 2 ct with a halo. I love it. But if I had a round 2 ct, I would not halo it. I don''t have a good reason for feeling this way, but I just don''t like the look of a big round with a halo. My 2 ct is not my original e-ring either. It''s my second upgrade. I''ve grown into it''s size.

If I were to halo a round, I''d stick to about a 1.5 ct RB or smaller . . . just my 2 cents.
