Clearly we need to clone him several times so he can have a bustling workshop full of many Mikes to make all the PSers fabulous jewelry.

But those are in a totally different realm of pricing - sold by the likes of Christies! I would fathom that settings like that would cost upwards of 15 or 20k and likely more for a 5 carat stone. They are amazing for inspiration though! I much prefer that look than a halo for such a big stone.

Phoenix, my vote is firmly not halo. I think an elaborate shank and basket, along the lines of rose bloom's photos would complement Holly fully. Halos are so common now, I wouldto see something more unique on your exceptional stone. Something with lots of interest from all angles.

So what you are really saying is because I want to double halo my OMC that it will look tacky?!?!?! JUST KIDDING DS!DS you know I think you have excellent taste, but I have to say that I completely understand Phoneix on wanting to halo it. While a classic solitare is stunning in so many ways I think for some people it can just be a little too understated for them. I think Phoneix likes that extra little excitment in her jewelry. When I was at Tiffany's last month I tried on a 9ct RB with a halo and it was STUNNING! I think as long as the ring is done well then a halo. no matter what size of diamond, will always compliment.

If it is haloes my vote is a colored melee.
dianabarbara|1356724938|3341647 said:should you decide not to halo, but rather to have an engraved setting, perhaps this picture could help.
Perhaps a 5 carat stone would not look good in this type of basket, and it is a simple setting as compared with the ones you seem to be considering, yet I really love it, so I thought I could share

FrekeChild|1356728033|3341701 said:I'd combine a few ideas. I'd get Mike Robinson to do it, first of all. Most of the attached pics are from his site.
1. Halo, super thin, altered outline, much like the Aqua I've attached. Pure round halos on round stones? It looks a little flying saucer-y IMHO. Been there, seen it a hundred times. It's just not original enough for you.
2. Classic thin pave shank, classic basket, like Blake Lively's.
3. All pink gold.
4. I remember your penchant for pink. I would make the halo light pink diamonds, gradually deepening to light pink sapphires on the basket, medium pink sapphires from basket to ring, bright/dark pink sapphires on the shank and then to rubies around the bottom of the shank. Mike has already shown an interest in playing with gradation of color - an ombre effect if you will.
I've never seen anything like it, but I feel like this idea could be very you. Plus it'd bring out how white your diamond is!

Having said that, you should email him to confirm. Aside from that, I know a lot of different options have been discussed on here, but if you're wanting a more elaborate style, you may need to up your budget a wee bit. I didn't have a set budget when I went to him, and I thought the price for what I got was very reasonable, just FYI. I've played with quite a few of the Mike R designs below, and they're all so much more beautiful in real life. I know he prefers to work with more elaborate, artistic designs than some of the more traditional options that have been listed in this thread.
Totally support your choice to halo Holly. My ring is 16mm across with its double halos, and though I'm very well aware that some people may think it's over the top and unnecessary, I wouldn't have it any other way. Well, except bigger, but I'm working on that![]()
Best of luck!

Oh no! I hope he won't turn me away!![]()
I am going to think about some of the design features, get a better firmer idea of what I'd like and then float them with him and see what he says.
If you don't mind my asking and no need to disclose the exact figure, was what you paid for your gorgeous ring around the area of what I have in mind for mine? or a lot more?
Hmmmm...I'd be interested in hearing which of those designs shown you think are more traditional? I find most if not all of the ones Rosebloom posted quite ornate.
Thank you for your vote!![]()

Well, the worst he can say is no! There's no harm in trying
Regarding pricing, that's best discussed with him. For a number of reasons the cost of my setting probably isn't an accurate gauge of what he would charge for a more ornate type of setting, but I will say that it was a decent amount more than your upper limit.
I guess by 'traditional' I mean the usual VC/LM/SK HW-inspired halo. I know that recreating designs, as opposed to having the freedom to come up with his own, isn't his favourite thing to do. As others have mentioned, he loves colour and really loves floral and intricate detail. I think he'd definitely be the guy to go to if you wanted someone to have carte blanche with your setting, but maybe not the right person if you have very fixed/rigid ideas about what you want. He's definitely not the guy to send a 20-page PowerPoint presentation to about different elements, if you know what I mean (not that there's anything wrong with that!)
I'm not trying to speak for him, but he's my best friend so I flatter myself that I know a little about what sort of work he likes to do. He doesn't come on PS very much any more, but I'll let him know about this thread anyway.
