I would love to see what Mike Robinson could come up with for Holly! If you want unique, one off, handcrafted goodness, I think he has a whole lot to offer.

I was going to suggest him too! I'm sure I've seen some sleeker, simpler things by him -his craftmanship is just incredible

Thank you, JuneRose. Will check FB.

Phonenix, you have excellent taste and I have no doubt that whatever you choose will be beautiful. I sincerely mean that.

However, and you probably already know what I am going to say...5 carat rounds just don't need a halo, and in fact, I think very large rounds with halos look like they are trying too hard to be something else. Some of the most elegant large rings on here that I can think of do not have halos. I can't remember the name of the gal with the large EC, but she did the beautiful French cut sides, I think, and there just isn't a much more classy ring than that, in my opinion. Bright Ice has a similar ring that she had set with a large rb and then changed to an OEC, I believe. So that would be my choice for your ring. Classy and elegant and not over the top. (And I think studs at 2-2.5 cts each is really nice and as large as most people can wear as well as in proportion to your ring. I hope you know I consider you a friend and am just being honest.) And another reason I would not do a halo is that you have one on the pear, and if you ever wanted to wear them together, I think two halos is a mistake.

So what you are really saying is because I want to double halo my OMC that it will look tacky?!?!?! JUST KIDDING DS! DS you know I think you have excellent taste, but I have to say that I completely understand Phoneix on wanting to halo it. While a classic solitare is stunning in so many ways I think for some people it can just be a little too understated for them. I think Phoneix likes that extra little excitment in her jewelry. When I was at Tiffany's last month I tried on a 9ct RB with a halo and it was STUNNING! I think as long as the ring is done well then a halo. no matter what size of diamond, will always compliment.

DS, you know I consider you a friend as well and I greatly value your opinions. I appreciate what you're trying to say.

Sarah hits the nail right on the head though. I do love understated elegance generally speaking, but at the same time I love a little twist, something extra and that's why I love Gucci clothes and shoes - they're not incredibly showy, rather more clean-lined/ streamlined but there's always some unusual design element that makes them unique and stand out.

Like Sarah, I tried on a 12ct RB in Tiffany that has a teeny tinest halo that makes the centre stone really POP and enhanced it beauty rather than making it tacky or "too much". The gallery design was beautiful too (unfortunately, I don't remember enough about the gallery design to recreate it). The ring literally took my breath away! It was very artful and tasteful

As for French cuts, whilst I love them on other people, I don't love them too much on *me*. I just prefer thinner bands on rings....dunno why realy, I just find thinner bands look better on my hands.

And I'd never wear the pear and Holly at the same time - too much competition though Holly is too much of a lady to express any discomfort, he he! :wink2: :cheeky: For me, RHRs = 3 stone diamond ring, larger eternity bands, coloured stones and the like. In any case, I'd like Holly's new costume to be slightly more elaborate than that on my pear, with a few more custom-made details. So perhaps rose gold and/ or pink melee and/ or hand-engraving and/ or a unique gallery would make Holly more unique and different from anything I've already owned.

As for the 3ct earrings, what can I say, I blame it on DSS! :naughty:

Haha! In actuality, I love cushions with halos FAR more than on rounds. In fact, I like a halo on any size cushion! Not fond of double halos except on smaller stones, though (like Wintotty's yellow diamond center one). But as far as large rounds go, I just have a preference for the french cut band because that is something that few people in the world would have. Plus she has a halo on the pear stone, so I wouldn't want all my rings to be alike, personally! But I am not going to have to worry about this since I don't see any 3-5 ct. diamonds coming my way anytime soon (ever, actually!). ;))

Phoenix, I am not really saying that I don't think they are tasteful...I mean, I think every halo Victor Canera does is a masterpiece! But you already have a pear halo ring, and I really feel like round halos are not really unique, I guess. Although an original gallery might make me change my mind! I love that antique setting that I think Sarah posted above with some refinement. That would add the art to the setting but be something different than a halo, too.

Re: Hallo 5.318ct diamond? Holly might need a costume change

I just realized you said you'd never wear Holly with the pear halo, so are you planning on selling the pear??? I'll bet you wouldn't wear it once you have Holly like you want!

Ha ha, no. No plan to sell the pear ring, at least not in the immediate future. I am one of those people that like to have more than one ering, for different occasions.

Re: Hallo 5.318ct diamond? Holly might need a costume change

Oh, I am in total agreement that I could have more than one e-ring!!! However, I would be happy if I could have ONE that was really what I want at this point!!! Not sure if I'll ever get there or not!!!

Re: Hallo 5.318ct diamond? Holly might need a costume change

While your current setting is lovely, I totally understand wanting a new costume for Holly. Somehow I think a three or even four carat center in a simple solitaire is understated elegance. But once you've crossed over into five carat land, it needs something delicate and extraordinary. It needs to have a bespoke setting. Otherwise it almost looks fake (never with your stunning Holly in that beautiful Leon but if the craftsmanship weren't as perfect I could see another stone and another setting veering that way). You need a one in a million, extraordinarily fine setting.

I love the pictures I've seen of Mike's work. I tend to think of him as the master of "whimsical" whereas I think of Leon as "sexy" and Victor as "classic". Don't know of those are really accurate but just my impressions.

Here are some images I've saved that might spark some thinking. I have bigillions more if you'd like further fodder. :)

Rosebloom,

Thank you for those amazing images and yes yes please do keep them coming.

I particularly LOVE your analogy...ha ha, I never actually thought of those designs in those terms but you are not too far off, actually! :appl:

At the risk of driving you and everyone else a bit crazy, the new costume that I'd love for Holly would encompass all those three elements - sexy, classic/ classy with a whimsical touch! I know I am prob driving everyone here crazy with my reference to Gucci clothes and shoes (have a look at their website and you'll see what I mean), particularly when Tom Ford was their designer. They clothes fit me like a glove, they're classy and yet at the same time incredibly sexy (in a very tasteful and not overtly sexy/vulgar way) and they always come with an element of play and suprise. I know I am not asking for much, he he! :wink2:  :naughty:

Re: Hallo 5.318ct diamond? Holly might need a costume change

I'm off to research Gucci... You know, so that I may be more helpful! Totally altruistic motives. :)

I wonder if Lorraine Schwartz does custom work for mere mortals? It seems like she has the aesthetics you're after.

Hah, having said all that, their current selection is not great! :(sad

Let me see if I can take some pics of my past-seaons Gucci clothes and shoes and post them so you'll know what I am talking about.

RE Roberto Cavalli, I do actually have some, let's say more subdue, pieces I can actually post also.

Hmmm...LS, isn't she one of the jewellery designers favoured by celebrities? Something tells me I can't afford her designs! ;(

Re: Hallo 5.318ct diamond? Holly might need a costume change

Ok, drooled over Gucci images. Wow! They seem to have an edge and drama to their pieces. For some reason my first thought when I wondered "how do these clothes translate to a ring setting?" was this kind of basket, but with rubies instead of diamonds:

Re: Hallo 5.318ct diamond? Holly might need a costume change

Rosebloom, thank you soooooooooo much for pics of all these absolutely AMAZINGLY BEAUTIFUL designs. I am off to bed soon but will have to pore over all the images and decide which designs/ which elements of each design I love the most.

The next issue to decide is whom to ask to do the setting, would it be Mike or Jar or Anna Hu or anyone else?

Will try and take pics of my Gucci pieces over the next few days, but it doesn't really seem to be necessary now. I think you've got my taste down pat. :appl: :appl:

Re: Hallo 5.318ct diamond? Holly might need a costume change

Rosebloom -those settings are amazing! No doubt JAR and Anna Hu settings are to die for!! But those are in a totally different realm of pricing - sold by the likes of Christies! I would fathom that settings like that would cost upwards of 15 or 20k and likely more for a 5 carat stone. They are amazing for inspiration though! I much prefer that look than a halo for such a big stone.

Re: Hallo 5.318ct diamond? Holly might need a costume change

I think Holly would look gorgeous in this setting!!

Re: Hallo 5.318ct diamond? Holly might need a costume change

Wow great images rose bloom!

Phoenix, my vote is firmly not halo. I think an elaborate shank and basket, along the lines of rose bloom's photos would complement Holly fully. Halos are so common now, I would  to see something more unique on your exceptional stone. Something with lots of interest from all angles.

understated??? which piece of jewelry that Phoenix owns that we can say it is "understated"?... anymore excitment from Phoenix and Liz Taylor will flip over in her grave..

Re: Hallo 5.318ct diamond? Holly might need a costume change

I would either leave her alone as is, esp if you plan to trade her in for a larger stone later, OR put her in a ring with an ornate undercarriage but no halo.
