HAALP! You tasteful people. This emerald in Platinum or 18 K Yellow Gold?

I prefer emeralds set in white metals, makes the colour pop IMO, but it’s all down to personal preference, there’s no right or wrong.

Stylistically IMHO 8x6+ look good in white metal and 7x5 or less look better in yellow. It’s a “bling versus subtle” thing in my mind. But tastes vary.

So smaller stones look better in yellow and larger in white. This stone is 5x3 mm.

What about rose gold? I'm considering rose gold too

I'm thinking YG for that stone. It has some darker inclusions. I do not see it in RG or Pt. Next choice would be unplated WG which has some warmth.

Fo emerald, I love a YG basket or collet in a platinum mounting but that's OTT, labor-wise, for a stone of this size.

I am considering this setting... platinum, yellow or rose gold

I think it’s fine enough color to hold its own in white metal. White metal is also very classic. I would just be careful if setting in platinum, as it is a hard metal and the emerald can chip if the jeweler isn’t skilled enough in dealing with colored stones. I think 14k white gold is a better choice. It will be more durable than 18k, but not as hard as platinum.

Two-tone - a rose gold bezel and a white gold halo if it was mine!

DK :))

I have been getting attached to white. Bench people told me they can do platinum with not too much $ difference between white gold and platinum...so why not

I’ve always thought that emeralds look best in yellow gold.

A rich 22k yellow gold always seems like the right pairing for a beautiful emerald, and this is coming from a white metal enthusiast.

You can make this stone look good in both white and yellow metal. The choice between the two should come depending on what you wear and enjoy (assuming it’s meant for you to wear). After all, what use would it be to be advised to go with yellow gold if you only prefer wearing white metals?

I like the idea of gold prongs on an otherwise white gold setting, though you say the labour cost is too high.

Like some others, I like the idea of yellow prongs/bezel/faux bezel with the rest white. I think yellow against the stone brings out the green of emeralds.
That said your stone is such a strong clean green that all yellow would also be good.

Here's a demo I've shown before. Top is half a trapiche set in brushed platinum, bottom is EC in18K yellow gold. (The stone looks better IRL.) Left straight, right photoshopped. Make of this what you will...

I like platinum if there are going to be diamonds. If just emerald, I like a 18 kt gold. No rose gold.

yellow all the way for me
but i love yellow gold

green and gold are just a natural pairing

This would be my answer. (FWIW, I've had emeralds in both WG and yellow gold.)

No clue until I see it against skin tone.

Just a few photos to add to the discussion. I like gold prongs on white as suggested by @dk168 and @JewelledEscalators but you can see how gold makes the green pop in some of the rings here, but I do agree it is about your own skin tone, preference and what you already have in your jewel box!
