So I was looking at a diamond today and saw H&A noted on the GIA cert. However, when I asked about the stone I was told it was poorly cut and I wouldn't want it. I asked about the inscription but couldn't get an answer to why it was there. The jeweler said it was impossible and the stone didn't meet H&A requirements. What's the deal?

GIA will girdle inscribe whatever the client asks for within the limits of trademark violations and the like. They don't grade H&A at all.
Why is it there? Because someone paid them to put it there.

That diamond does not have measurements that are close to what we usually see in ideal cut, H&A round which usually have a crown angle 34-35 pavilion angle 40.6-41, table 54-58, depth 60-62.3, approximately. The H&A vendors have tighter specs that those. Those measurements may work okay together, but I don't like stones with low crowns. I think they are more attractive with higher crowns than 14% and I don't look at crown angles under 34.

your jeweler is being honest with you. There are many others who try to use this girdle inscription to pass of substandard stones as H&As.

That is...I just don't know what to say. :angryfire:. Surely this is really unethical and misleading?

I think you are fortunate to be working with a jeweler that was honest with you about the inscription. Sadly I think some would have played off it. :nono:

I second the support for your jeweler. If you're interested in buying an H&A, the source is going to be whoever is selling it to you. The standards of what is and is not a heart are coming from them. Again, GIA does not grade this, nor do they claim to. On the report they are simply reporting the fact that something is written on the girdle. There is nothing unethical about that.
