I thought of a name today. I've not told anyone else yet-I want to run it by you guys first as impartial people.

First tho, if you were naming a gym, how would you go about it? For instance, there is a place in another town that is called 24 Hr Fitness. One of the places in town here is "X" Gym and the other is "X" Center. (I googled them and they both pop up as my town and I don't want to get in trouble, otherwise I'd say the names)

Would you pick a certain aspect of your gym to highlight it in the gym's name, or would you do something like "The Gym" b/c that's what everybody says anyway? "Where are you headed?" "Going to the gym, back in an hour"

At first I'd thought to use the initials of our last names since my brother's nickname isn't gonna work. But..that would be J.R. And I thought that sounded kinda..don't get mad at the term, but it sounded kinda redneck-y.

This is the fun part!

I'd probably give it a name other than "The Gym" but I can't tell you what that would be because I have no idea! Bars and 'Bells? (Ha! Just kidding.)

Remind me--is this gym going to have EVERYTHING? Weights, machines, group ex classes, a spa, etc? If so, I'd call it a club rather than a gym.

I'm not much help, sorry. I'm looking forward to seeing what other people come up with, though!

haha I love to name things!

Free weights, treadmills, ellipticals (sp), machines, classes (fingers crossed I can get myself in shape haha), I would like to have a hot tub and an infra red sauna. Would LOVE to put in a pool later too. Day care, juice bar, work out clothing, supplements, maybe tanning, hopefully a chiropractor and massage therapist. Maybe down the road could add more spa type things too.

It makes me think of that damn Snapple commercial that makes me laugh "Good stuff for bettering...stuff.."

I like the word "sport" to be part of the name. Somehow it just gives me the impression of athletic training. If I had a gym I'd probably name it Pro Sport, or something like that. I would not put a Family name to it because it'd sound like a mom & pop shop (less professional).

Your gym sounds awesome!

I always wanted to have an old school gym named Lift. You know the type--with a bunch of free weights and bodybuilders walking around all the time. ROAAAAAAR!

Anyway . . . where will it be located in your town? Midtown Gym? Uptown Gym?

I think I'm better at naming pets.

Hmm...tricky question! I definitely dislike gym names that include dirty-sounding words, like "sweat." It makes me think I'll be working out next to drippy, smelly people on smeary machines. We have a lot of gyms named either "X Street Gym," "X Fitness Club" or "X Sports Club" here, which are fine but not very original. The gym I used to go to was called "The Sporting Club at [X]," which I always found pretty pretentious. It is the see-and-be-seen gym here (though I always tried to go at off hours so I didn't have to do either), so the name fits. I also dislike text-speak in business names, like "Good4U Gym."

As far as what I'd like...well, something more catchy but still professional, I guess. Haven's ideas both sound good to me, actually! I'm not nearly so creative, though.

Wow, Haven, you're GOOD!!! I love the name Lift. It could apply to the gym aspect, but also to the massage and spa aspects -- lifting one's spirit. It's a very cool name!!

The only thing I can think of is Arise... but I'll mull it some more.

Oooh yes, you're right! I didn't even think of the spa applications, but that would totally work!

I just like it because lifting gives me a lift, yanno?

Lift is really good Haven! :appl: That's kinda along the lines of what I was looking for.

So, ok, be gentle, this is what I thought of this morning. Even if you think it's the dorkiest name, tell me it's dorky nicely.

My reasoning is, I'd like something that sets it apart as not the see and be seen place where all the richies go to check each other out and do board room deals. Where people go to bust some butt and sweat and it's a continuous challenge.

The Gauntlet. Is that dumb? I was thinking, you throw down the gauntlet as a challenge, you run the gauntlet as a challenge..or punishment haha. See..now I write it out and I make this face.

Poop. Ok just don't anybody bwahahahaha at me.

I appreciate all the suggestions everyone! I need to have my brother read both threads when he's over tomorrow. :appl:

The Gauntlet sounds really hard core!

I think it's good, but it also might have the potential to attract (and maybe detract?) a particular clientele. In particular, I know my husband would be hesitant to rent out space from you if he thought the name of the gym might scare away some of his older clients.

That being said, I think it's a cool name. Wasn't there an MTV show called The Gauntlet? I could be wrong about that.

ETA: I sound really critical, sorry! I just want to consider the possible negatives of such a strong name. I really like it!

Thanks! I was going to edit it a second ago to ask if it would intimidate some people. I think of the little old ladies that walk on the treadmill and watch their stories, you know? :? I can't say I see them wearing a Tshirt w/The Gauntlet on it..

Hardcore was what I thought too, b/c I was thinking of my brother..with his bodybuilding contests, he's had to be really committed (Interruption: What about Commit? Is that too much like Comet? Sounds like Come It?) to his lifting and eating. haha one time JD and I went to one of his contests and were up really late. He woke me up in my hotel room that night to ask me if I'd like to get up and have a candy bar with him-"I haven't had a candy bar in 2 years Mis, c'mon!" I'm like "OMG it's 2am! Whatever, is that a Whatchamacallit?" Ahhh nothing like sisterly devotion. :praise: Devotion? That's kinda too lovey.

Let's call it I worship my little brother.

The Gauntlet sound more like a SCA event than a gym, to me. Or a computer game. Or even a BSM club :naughty: It doesn't bring fitness to my mind.

Have you tried writing down all the attributes and what sets your place apart? You can get good ideas from those lists. Then, choose 4 or 5 and talk to people who are possible clients and see how they react. I think PS might be a bit too diverse for you to gauge the reaction - we may or may not be the public you are looking for.

I stand by the tanning thing. Reason being is because you'll be able to draw in a younger crowd too. I'm not saying older people don't tan but A LOT of younger people do and that would be something I know a lot of my own friends would join a gym for.

What about something that connotes "Top of the world"/success like :

Pinnacle
Apex
Summit

Do you guys have a particular clientele in mind?
