Okay, my kids haven't really been into kid music, but LOVE grown up stuff. My younger son has shown interested in a couple of bands and I've let him listen to the music. . .but now, I had them in the car and played the Smiths, which I think may be a bit iffy in regards to acceptability for kids. So, they kept asking for it every day and I have caved and let them listen to it before bed.

They really enjoy it, but I'm thinking there may be something more suitable for kids that's also grown up music.

Any recommendations?

how old are your children?

In the car with me I give my kids 2 options - classical or jazz. They almost always pick jazz which is fine for me. If I had a collection of techno (sans vocals) I'd give that too, but I just don't have it. My youngest is 9 and here in china I've been more flexible since we don't get radio stations. At least not ones with songs in english!

MC, my DH is a musician and it has always been important to him that our kids be exposed to a variety of music. I have a few suggestions - of course you have to filter out any songs with lyrics you deem inappropriate:

The Beatles
The Ramones
John Coltrane
Miles Davis
Cat Power
Dismemberment Plan (DD loves them!)
ManMan (very fun - DD says it sound like carnival music)
Eyeball Skeleton (this is a dad and his young sons playing rock music)

I love listening to music with the kids that I can enjoy too.

ETA - how could I forget DD's favorite - Me First and the Gimme Gimmes. They do punk rock covers of *classics*.

My kids are 8 and 9 (about to be 10). They LOVE the Beatles and I let them listen to them for a while till the kept asking for Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. lol They've been asking to listen to New Order as that is one of my fav bands, but the CD I really love the most is the first one compiled after the lead singer of the original band (Joy Division) committed suicide, soooo. . .may be too gloomy for them.

Will check out some of the ones you mentioned. Oh, and have you heard the Dead Milkman? They really like them. . .they just got a little too hooked on the catchy "Bitchen Camero." When they started singing it by memory, I began to wonder if that would freak out their friends' moms.

Thanks.

My son LOVES techno. . .I had one CD that I told him was the "Power Rangers" CD and he would beg to hear it all the time (lol). My other son hated it, so we could only listen in the car. My younger is the type to ask to hear the same song over and over.

I grew up on Fleetwood Mac and the Bee Gees, and I reckon I turned out okay ::)

DH and I were talking about this the other day, in the car etc. he listened to whatever his parents were listening to too. We're going to try not to get our kids started on kids' songs - there's really only so much Raffi anyone over eight can take ;(

I grew up listening to a lot of James King, Carly Simon, and Carole King as well as the other artists previously mentioned here. :wink2:

I grew up listening to:
Simon & Garfunkel
The Who
Grateful Dead
Carly Simon
James Taylor
Bruce Springsteen
Frank Sinatra
Fleetwood Mac
CCR
The Beatles
Cat Stevens
Janis Joplin

I think I turned out to have great taste in music. :cheeky:

LOVE the Dead Milkmen! My fav is Punk Rock Girl.

both myself and hubby are (or at least in my case, were) musicians. we have two kids: 5 and 2.5. our kids love:

mgmt
hank marvin & the shadows
the ramones
frank zappa (not my doing... definitely the hubby's!)... at the age of 3 she'd belt out "baby snakes"

those are just a smattering. they do listen to adult music and i'm not concerned about it.

btw, i love both new order and the smiths! ("and if a ten ton truck kills the both of us, to die by your side...") accch, the melody of the smiths is so sweet and sometimes jangly that the lyrics will often get lost on 'em! the same goes with joy division. the kids have no idea ian curtis killed himself.

music is music is music (i suppose as long as it's not death metal?!)

i too love "punk rock girl".

We listened to whatever mom and dad played in the car. Mom mostly listened to the radio, and dad always had his cassettes..mostly the "collection" ones, you know? Sounds of the 50's, Rockin to the 60's, that kinda thing. Beatles, Monkee's, old country.

Our kids listen to what we listen to. Either the radio or a cd-Tom Petty, Godsmack, Nickelback. Just not as loudly as when it's just me in the truck.

Unless it's the radio and Come on Eileen happens to play, then I don't care, it's loud and I'm screeching along and rocking out.

We play a lot of songs on youtube while we're cooking and I'll fold laundry in the kitchen so I can sing. JD and I each have our favorites, and the kids love it-Trapper runs in to watch the videos. His all time favorite since he was a newborn-The Devil Went Down to Georgia. We also bust a move to Boy George, Billy Joel, Elton John, Michael Jackson, Powerman 5000 and Rob Zombie.
