Elle at TGP found one for me and it's headed my way. It will take a while to get to me but sooo excited. 3.15ct and 8.5mm square. It's said to be a light to mid-grey in color. Here are the pictures I have so far. Thoughts? General impressions? Concerns?

Light gray spinels are beautiful! :)

Lovely!!! So excited for you! Looks like a beautiful gray.

You're in good hands. I'm sure it will be great if it has her approval.

What a stunning shade of grey. Looking forward to see it set. How exciting for you!!!

Neither Elle nor I have seen it in person yet but she thought it looked promising (so that was a strong recommendation in my mind) and the return policy is very reasonable considering the stone is coming from overseas. I will need to make a decision probably the day it shows up or the next day to stay within the return window, but that's the only downside. Oh I am so bad at waiting, the next week is going to be miserable (I'm hoping to get it about the 12th I think).

I love the shape! I hope it goes metallic in sunlight like many of these grey spinels do. Let us know when you get it in hand. So excited for you!!

How exciting. I hope you post some pics when it arrives...forever from now.:lol:

I LOVE the look of this stone!!!! I have a trillion grey spinel and I can't wait to have the $ to set it. Grey stones are beautiful!

Wow! Congratulations on a very nice stone. :)

Looks gorgeous! Can't wait to see your pics once you get it.

It's a beautiful color. It looks drastically different in both sets of photos. I'm not sure if it's just me, or the cut won't do that color justice. Time will tell. I'm excited for you and I'll cross my fingers!

So pretty! Congratulations and kudos for patience and waiting for what you initially wanted.
It looks like it might snag a lot of environmental colors in the second photo? I think that would be awesome.
So beautiful- cant wait to see more pics when you get it!

Elle says she is very happy with how it looks so I think that's a very good sign. She previously rejected another stone as not even worth sending to me after a failed recut.

I agree it looks quite different in the photos but I think grey spinels are especially hard to photograph. I do hope the cut is decent. I'm prepared to have a good but not excellent cut to get the size and color I want in an asscher or emerald. Its hard because I know cut matters a lot for asscher and emerald but as long as its not clearly very wonky I think I'll love it.

So pretty!

It would be awesome if it picked up the color around it! I'd been thinking of trying to find some light purple/ lavender spinel or sapphire baquettes and setting it as a three or five stone ring so then it might pick up the purple but then I saw some really lovely emerald halos so now I'm torn (maybe halo with purple melee?) Oh so many choices!

Looking at Elle's pics- This is my favorite "grey" in grey spinels. I find that metallic look gorgeous and I agree that they are very hard to photograph. From the pics the cut looks very nice and it is a very nice sized spinel. Looking forward to your impressions and pics.

It's so pretty, an ethereal kind of grey. So excited for you!

It's here!!!!! And oh my word is it gorgeous! I love it! It has some minor cut issues because I see some small tilt windows but I think when set it will be fine.

It is so hard to photograph! Basically impossible. None of the pictures are a good reflection of what I see in real life in my office. I see light grey that reflects a lot of environmental color and has a lot of fire. I think it has a slight blue or possibly teal modifier. If I hold it under my desk it's a mid grey but definitely grey and not black. Here goes with the pictures. I think the closest picture is the one on the inside of my hand by the window. But the color doesn't change much in my office versus by the window.

It's huge! I'm not usually a big fan of grey spinels but this one looks gorgeous!

What were you planning on doing with it? Ring?

Yep, it is a knock out. Knowing the Queen of grey spinel chose it for you, I had absolutely no doubts it would be awesome. Congrats - pretty rare to find one in that size and style. :appl:

It is pretty big - 8.5mm. I'm a bit like Acinom in that I like big gems (sadly my budget is not so thrilled about this!) The plan is definitely a ring. (Although I think it would make an amazing necklace -- but then I couldn't see it!) Initially I thought it would be a three or five stone sort of like one Elle at TGP had on Instagram a while back, but with bezels, but now I don't know. I really like some of the halos I've seen and i sort of like how it looks in the kite orientation. I think I do want to bezel it just to make sure I don't chip a corner.

In any event there needs to be a lot of saving before I can set it! (And no more getting distracted and buying other stuff!)

Story of my life!!! o_O:whistle:

Yep that's a beauty!

It's gorgeous!!!! I love this.
So happy you are thrilled with this beauty. I agree that the stone will look great in a kite set ring.

Really gorgeous stone! Just love it! It's very chic.

I can only imagine the sparks of color that stone (he? she?) shoots off!

I would set it in black rhodium. As far as your concern about tilt windows, they are normal in all gems, even well cut ones. Only diamonds and sphalerite seem to have much less noticeable tilt windows. Enjoy your new gem.

halo, halo, halo...

Work is crazy at the moment (what am I doing here) but as soon as I have a some spare moments I will draw out some ideas and share them!

:appl::appl::appl::appl: bling bling!!! loveeee it!!
