Hi, I''m new to this forum but already addicted! I recently discovered green tourmalines on a trip to St. Thomas and now I have to have one. Preferably one that is 3-5 carats. Can anyone recommend some reputable websites to buy from or ebay sellers? Also, I know price can vary depending on the stone, but what would an average price range be for a stone in this size family?

Thanks!!

Hi Amelie:

Top chrome green tourmaline is rich, bright, green and can be very difficult to distinguish between tsavorite garnets and has been described as "forest green". Some chrome tourmaline displays a greenish/yellow cast which can be attractive, but too much yellow and the stone can display an olive color. Other gems display more of a greenish-blue hue.
Chrome tourmaline is scarcer than tsavorite, they occasionally come in 10 carat sizes, which tsavorites do not. I have seen some of the finest larger chrome tourmaline priced between $800-$1200 per carat..

You can get a great stone in the range of $100-$300 per carat. Price is largely dependent on the purity of the primary green hue.
