For those of you who know my bad story of my fiance buying my engagement ring from Zales, I have a good ending so far!! Zales gave him a refund, for the entire ring. They knew what they did! I wanted to keep the setting, but the new jeweler we went to suggested the band be a bit thicker, and we agreed, so the entire ring was returned. It stinks that the ring he proposed with is gone, BUT we are both full of smiles that we made this decision. We are mature enough to know that our love is what was important the day he asked me to marry him, not the ring. We may not have the original ring (we just got engaged on the 14th) but we will always have each other, and even a laugh about the situation.

We are getting the same setting made, I just loved it. I''ts a platimun setting with a yellow gold band, center stone is Princess and side stones are baguettes. Here are the specs on the center stone that we are looking at, what do you all think?

Cert: EGL
1.27 ct
6.00 x 5.74 x 4.22

73.5% Depth
75% table width
girdle: med polis

Polish: good t v.good
Symmetry: good

Well, why not return this one too? It is quite deep, with a large table (in absolute terms and relative to depth... which in this case should be quite hard, but they made it!), and not all that square. I know well cut princesses are not as easy to find as RBCs, but I guess the PS crowd found quite a few nice ones already. A recent, long post ('Dream Team...') contains a detailed discussion. Also, there are some specs for what pricess cuts should measure under 'fancy cuts' on the first page of PS. While those limits are quite harsh, they do make reasonable guidelines. After all, a nice 65% depth will make you get something decently bigger-looking (and more sparkly, hopefully) for the same money. A better cut does not necesarily carry a premium (unless it hapens to be a brand, but this is by no means the norm). Getting a great stone should help the new ring make the other's image fade away, shouldn't it?

Oh thanks Ana!! We ddn't buy this stone yet. I would love to have a 65% depth instead. I think I will look around more..

Kathio,

Do please read Jenibear's post on her beautiful princess. There are a few online vendors who would be able to find you something just beautiful for a really reasonable price. If you're not comfortable yet buying online, then try hanging out on Pricescope for a while and soaking up the information before making a decision. It helped ease my fears enormously!

Congratulations on your engagement and your wonderfully optimistic attitude towards this process.

Daniela that's exactly what I was thinking when I read this thread!

Kathio: If you can wait a while (I KNOW it's hard), and hang around PScope for a few weeks, you'll begin to understand what factors enhance the performance of a diamond.

I was also very fearful when I first began reading PScope, but after a few months, I'm convinced that online is the only way to go. The vendors here understand the importance of the cut of a diamond, and have the equipment to be able to ensure that you get a high performing stone.

They can send you pictures of the diamond you're interested in, along with all the information you'd need to make an informed decision.

Like Daniela wrote, take a look at Jenibear's posts - her diamond is gorgeous.

Congratulations on your engagement! I love happy endings!

Kathio - a lot of the vendors on the internet will send the diamond to an appraiser before you decide, so you can be sure you get a good deal. David Atlas, who contributes to this forum, is known for his standards for fancy cuts and would do a great job, as would other appraisers on this site. Good luck and happy hunting.

Happy hunting and post pic's when your all done..
