Hi pricescropers,

https://www.gia.edu/report-check?reportno=6231478912

I am looking into buying the above diamond. It scores 1.5 on the HCA and so far I am fine with proceeding without having seen the ASET/IS images as it's not something my dealer would be able to provide. The price seems good to me (US$2,600).

However, as it is below 1 carat and has only a diamond dossier rather than a full report, I would like to ask if the fact that it has only clouds as the clarity characteristics is problematic? Would the clouds make the diamond milky or hazy, even in a VS2 diamond? Thanks a lot for all your help!

Measurements: 5.83 - 5.86 x 3.58 mm
Carat Weight: 0.76 carat
Color Grade: E
Clarity Grade: VS2
Cut Grade: Excellent
Depth: 61.2%
Table: 59%
Crown Angle: 34.0°
Crown Height: 14.0%
Pavilion Angle: 40.8°
Pavilion Depth: 43.0%
Star Length: 45%
Lower Half: 75%
Girdle: Slightly Thick, Faceted, 4.5%
Culet: None

In VS2 clouds are usually not a problem, but there's really no way to be sure without seeing the diamond. In this case, it worries me because cloud is the only listed inclusion, and the price is pretty good (sometimes a sign that there's something "off" about a diamond that has otherwise excellent stats).

Which website is it listed on? Wherever it is, I would ask a gemologist to pull the stone and give you their opinion on it. If it's a trustworthy company like any of the recommended vendors here on PriceScope, you can trust them to give you an honest opinion, as no company wants to go through the hassle of having you return a stone you're unhappy with.

Bottom line, I would not purchase this stone without having a qualified individual look it over in person.

Clarity grades are based on 10X magnification but even a diamond graded FL at 10X may show inclusions when you increase the magnification and look farther. While clarity features beyond 10X don't usually impact optics, a heavy frequency/density of such characteristics can interfere with light transmission. In some cases this is barely noticeable, in some it's rather obvious. Trade members nickname the obvious ones 'sleepy' diamonds. You can find regular examples, slight to severe, in commercial chain stores where big discounts are extended.

.

I would want to see the object ... If the grade was VS1 I would have said 'nevermind'. SI 'fog' I would expect to see.

The lightest, evenly dispersed clouds might give a faint bluish look - too subtle to notice without comparing with other stones. I am not sure if & how this might register in GIA clarity grading. Would guess less than VS2, but do not know ...

Thank you all for your helpful replies!! @TreeScientist @John Pollard @valeria101

This is a photoof the actual diamond that the seller sent me (it's a second-hand stone already mounted in a ring that's on consignment, so that might explain why the price seems to be a fair bit below market rate). It does look like it's suffering from some of the bluish look that @valeria101 mentioned, not to mention some haziness?

Am I right to say it's a pass?

The 'blue' I have mentioned is very subtle and hardly possible to photograph ... Confusingly, pictures of diamonds do appear tinted and hazy and whatnot, simply because the play of light off diamonds confuse cameras.

What I see in the picture is an elegant setting !

IHMO, you do need to see this diamond next to one without significant clouds (not IF, just with other types of clarity characteristcis), to know what is what...

Indeed what attracted me to this piece in the first place was the very delicate and tasteful setting! The ring was originally bought from a very reputable jeweller here in Hong Kong (Emperor Jewellery) and it also comes with a warranty for free resizing, which was why I thought it would make a great graduation present for my little sister.

Perhaps I will arrange for a viewing alongside my own VVS2 engagement ring (with only pinpoints) to see if the clouds are a problem, thanks for the advice! :kiss2:
