All -

first off, thanks again for your assistance with this purchase. I had Good Old Gold hold onto the ring until yesterday because I knew that I''d be proposing this weekend and wanted it kept in the safest place possible. The ring arrived this morning, and it looks great. (Better even than in the pictures I posted on that last thread back on June 2). The stone looks bigger than I expected it would, and definitely faces up nice and "white."

Several weeks ago, I asked my girlfriend to go away with me this weekend since it is the first weekend both of us are free after an extended period of long hours at work. I am hoping that she does not know what is coming (but she is so on-the-ball that it won''t shock me if she is not surprised!) Multiple obstacles threatened to derail this weekend''s timing, but it''s on for real.

The weather here in NY is really rainy at the moment, and my thought was to propose tomorrow evening, somewhere outdoors, with a view of the Hudson River - - not sure if we will be standing in 3 inches of mud, or what - preferably not! (No worries, I will improvise if needed).

Will let you know how it goes after the weekend.

Again, thanks so much!

- Jay

GL and btw I heard on the news that the rain is supposed to stop for tomorrow here in NY. Hopefully you will be able to go ahead with your plans.

congrats on the ring. GOG sells gorgeous stones~

If you want to propose by the Hudson, there's a restaurant here called "Steamers Landing." It's about 15 feet from the river with great views. It's on the Esplanade between Liberty and Albany st.
Good luck tomorrow!

Thanks, all! We''re headed north for the weekend (she lives in southern Westchester and I live in Brooklyn). I''m aiming for Cold Spring, with a view of Storm King Mountain. : )

So sweet!

All -

the short version is that the weather cooperated, she said yes, and she loves the ring. we''re going to investigate other settings, but she DOES like the one I got (the inexpensive one that left room in the budget for her to choose something else). She LOVES the stone. It''s incredibly sparkly - - the folks at GOG completely and utterly know their stuff. It''s great to know I got the best deal possible without sacrificing one iota of quality!

Will tell the whole story at some point, but at this point, have way too much work to catch up on. The proposal involved a box of Duncan Hines Most Deluxe spice cake mix and was on the eastern shore of the Hudson River . . . . if nothing else, it was memorable!

Thank you all again for your advice and recommendations.

Congrats!!!

The setting and diamond you chose turned out great and I''m really glad she liked i!!. And, wow - for $250 it is a really beautiful setting. If it was me, I would definitely wear it proudly for a while. I bet you could find some really beautiful wedding bands that would look great with it!!

Congrats to you!!!

How exciting! Congrats on a great find!

Woo hoo!

Here is the story - - finally have time to write it. The backstory is very long, so here is the extreme reader''s digest version of the backstory: For her birthday, we visited her aunt & uncle (whose approval of the relationship was vital to both of us), in Michigan. I had to meet her there after traveling to Chicago, and was unable to really pre-arrange baking/getting a cake. her favorite cake is spice cake, so when I got to Michigan, I bought a box of spice cake mix so that, worst case, I could tape a candle to the box and sing happy birthday. Long story short, the whole thing turned into a hilarious adventure with her uncle around getting cupcakes and a real cake (though we could not find spice cake). I DID tape the candle to the box and present it (as well as the store-bought cake) because we could not find her favorite flavor in a pre-baked cake.

The SCM (Spice Cake Mix) ended up being in several photos - with her aunt and uncle (and her aunt passed away in May - - the weekend we spent there in February was truly special), with the two of us, at the airport, with friends at a bar the following week - - we made a running joke of it and kept posting photos on facebook.

Last wednesday, I was talking about my proposal plans with my young colleague, and he said, "too bad you can''t bake it into a Spice Cake." That''s when the perfect proposal plan hit me. On Friday, I brought the spice cake with me (yes, the same one, there was no way that thing was ever getting baked) and before I picked her up to go away for the weekend, I taped the ring to the front of the box (securely!) and taped some protective padding over it. When we got out of the car at our destination, it looked like rainshowers were possible, so I said, "I''ll just bring my knapsack and we can stuff an umbrella and our raincoats in here." (Whew, I would never have had an excuse to tote it otherwise!)

(The rain mostly held off, BTW.)

We were at a tiny little park on the Hudson just north of Cold Spring (as I think I mentioned, we both adore the Hudson River). I started taking some photos, and said, "I brought someone to take photos with!" She knew instantly that I had brought the SCM. Before leaving the car, I had removed the extra padding over the ring, but left the box in its ziplock bag. So I just took the box and positioned it for a self-portrait (camera held at arm''s length). She wanted to check the camera to make sure we got the shot, and I started thinking, oh no - she''ll see the ring on the box either on the camera or when she looks down! I knew I should check to be sure we got the shot, but I just had to trust that it was good enough . . . .

She started to ask me why I was acting so strangely and I turned the front of the box toward her, dropped to one knee on the sand, and asked her to marry me. She said yes. : ) (She also said, "it''s PERFECT" - can''t beat that reaction to a ring!)

The attached photo is the BEFORE shot, cropped from the self portrait.

SO - Ironically, even though we attempted a few handshots, the best, non-fuzzy, perfectly focused one is the photo where she is holding the Spice Cake Mix, post-proposal. : )
