Hi all, I just got my sapphire Christmas earrings and love the color and size and the thin bezel. But there appear to be little pieces of metal inside the bezel - like prongs or something. I just sent email to the company and asked what they were (I attached a photo). Not sure if I''ll have to send them back or maybe can have a local jeweler fix them...

they look kiinda cloudy in the photo but they''re actually really a pretty color

I spoke to Yekutiel and he said they did that on purpose to guarantee that the stones wouldn''t fall out. He said sapphire isn''t as hard as diamond (which I knew) and that when setting them in a bezel, you don''t want to stress the stone and chip it. So his jeweler left those little "prongs". He said sometimes diamonds that are bezel-set have those too but you don''t see the metal as much against a white stone as you do against the sapphire. Regardless, he said he would be more than happy to remove those if I wanted him to. He is 100% behind them and wants me to be 100% happy with them.

What do you guys think? They''re certainly not visible in real life unless you''re looking at them in the box (close up) and won''t show when I''m wearing them. Should I leave them alone or have him remove the little metal prongs?

I think they are very pretty and the metal prongs wouldn''t bother me. If they are there to protect the stone I would leave them there

thanks MMT! I think I was thrown since I wasn''t expecting those. But I don''t want to make them less secure. Yekutiel said he thought they''d be just fine without them, but they did it as extra precaution.

got a better photo

good lord that''s a big photo

Those are really pretty! They look awfully similar to my diamond bezels

I would probably leave the little prongs because they really aren''t noticeable. I think it''d be more of a tragedy to break or lose a sapphire than for someone to notice they had prongs from 12 inches away, ya know?

thanks oobiecoo. Yep, they look like the blue twins of your diamonds! thanks for the input. they''re a great size!

Honestly, that sounds like BS to me. I''ve seen plenty of sapphires bezeled without problems, but I am sure it takes more time and effort than just putting in the little prongs. Something like that would bother me for sure...

see if this one is smaller

Thanks for the input neatfreak. I wondered about the logic. I can certainly see how the prongs would help make the stones more secure but I''ve never seen them on a bezel setting before.

Yeah...it sounds like their benchman wanted to make it easier on him. I have a lovely sapphire pendant that is bezeled and the jeweler had no problem setting it at all. I've seen MUCH softer gems bezeled than sapphires with no ill effects.

That said, if it doesn't bother you, who cares right? The size looks great on your ears!

you can barely see them in the picture in your ear, i can see what you are talking about in the box. does the jewler you bought them from have any type of warranty. will removing the prongs void it? i guess when it comes down to it what makes you feel better?

That''s the problem... I admit to being neurotic about stuff like this so I don''t want to leave them this way unless everyone here says "don''t worry about it - leave them alone - it''s not even noticeable..." hee hee...

I love the size. thanks!

hi Radiantquest, he said he''s more than happy to remove them if I want him to. I told him I''d think about it and let him know. He said he thinks the stones will be secure without them.

I think you should just leave them as they are Katie. Its not that noticible to me. I like them a lot.. they look lovely in your ears!

thank you Maisie!

I don''t usually wear earrings in my second holes - just put those in this week and didn''t take them out before the photo shoot...

Ditto Neatfreak about the BS... Honestly it would bother me... just for the simple fact that you were not expecting them.
I do think they look great on you ear, and people will probably not notice them, but I would say if it is going to bother you then send them back, if not, keep them as is

oobiecoo -- do your diamond bezels have those little prong things? I ask because I liked how yours look and I sent my hubby a link to them for my xmas gift...

It sounds like maybe the sapphires don''t fit in the bezels or something. Because stones are supposed to fit behind the bezel and not be able to fall out because the bezel should overlap the edges of the stone. I would not like them to be set like that with little prongs. Bezel settings aren''t supposed to need prongs from the front. I think the sapphires look pretty, though!

They would really bug me. Is it just me or is one of them not sitting level (the one on the right in the box seems lower on the top)? Beautiful sapphires, but I''d have the prongs removed and I would make sure it didn''t void a warranty first

I think overall they are really pretty, but I would definately have those removed. imho they give it an appearance of being unfinished, and it would annoy me to no end!

I think that they''re lovely and the perfect size, but I too would have the ''prongs'' removed, they''d always bother me. Selkie has killer sapph bezels and hasn''t had a problem. Neat solution, but distracting.

Wear them in good health!

I think it looks great! I would leave them as they are and just be glad you have added support. Plus you don''t really notice them unless you are right up next to them.

They are really cute! Plus some bezels DO have prongs under the overlap you just don''t see them.

Thank you all SO much for your feedback. I feel like everyone has justified my feelings of uncertainty on these. Most of you say send them back and have the prongs removed. And yes, I did notice that one stone was sitting a little higher than the other one. I didn''t mention that in my previous posts but I did notice it when I posted the photo of the side view ...

My husband asked me about sending them back and having them set in a martini setting instead of a bezel. Do you all think the color would be nicer in that type of setting? If these stones don''t really fit the bezels and that''s why they had to put prongs on them, should I have them put in a martini setting instead?

It would bother me...

Thanks tacori. I just got a really nice email from the jeweler and he said he would be happy to take them back in and fix them however I wanted them fixed. I mentioned that one stone seems to be set lower than the other and that I didn''t like the prongs. I told him I would send them back.

What would you all recommend?

Keep these stones and leave them in the bezels with the prongs removed?
Get new stones that are a better fit in the bezels? (Is the color on these good?)
Have these stones put in martini settings to make the color "pop" more?
