So confused as to what numbers constitute an excellent cut diamond..advice and suggestions please...AGS stones are limited when I search. What is a reasonable price for this diamond?
GIA ROUND BRILLIANT HCA 0.4

Measurements: 7.76 - 7.79 x 4.76 mm
Carat Weight: 1.76 carat
Color Grade: F
Clarity Grade: VS1
Cut Grade: Excellent
PROPORTIONS

Depth: 61.2%
Table: 56%
Crown Angle: 34.0°
Crown Height: 15.0%
Pavilion Angle: 40.6°
Pavilion Depth: 42.5%
Star Length: 55%
Lower Half: 80%
Girdle: Medium to Slightly Thick, Faceted (3.5%)
Culet: None
FINISH

Polish: Excellent
Symmetry: Excellent
Fluorescence: None

The numbers for an Excellent cut for a GIA diamond are very broad, all facets are averaged, then the average is rounded, not all GIA Excellent are created equal. The numbers of an AGSL Ideal diamond are very restrictive and very few diamonds make the AGSL Ideal grade.

Check Infinity, GoodOldGold, Whiteflash, Brian Gavin Diamonds for AGSL Ideals.....also the stone you show looks to be a very nice diamond, but more information is needed, lab report, picture images, Idealscope, ASET, also if you can get a full Sarin report will give you more detailed facet information.

These proportions will get you to a really good place:

Total depth: 59 – 61.8%
Table: 53 – 57%
Crown: 34.3 – 34.8 degrees
Pavilion: 40.6 – 40.9 degrees
Girdle: Between thin to slightly thick
Culet: AGS pointed or GIA none

You can over/undershoot the Crown and Pavillion numbers slightly if the opposing angle offsets the other. You can also slightly stretch the table number and depth slightly in certain combinations, but these are good general guidelines.

Hope this helps!

Where are you looking that you're not finding AGS stones? Blue Nile? The stone you referenced has great potential, but you should get more information/images than just the lab report.

Thanks krisjon for the tip on specs..

I have looked at good old gold, whiteflash, bgd..yielded lots of GIA stones and very few AGS stone. The one that does come up is not within the specs I'm looking for..I've been using pricescope's diamond search..and then checking if my local jeweler can get the stone I want to look at before buying it. The local jeweler doesn't have the capability to provide the IdealScope, Sarin images but they have a 90 days return policy. I was planning to take it to an independent appraiser within that 90 days. Any recommendations for an excellent appraiser in Houston?

Thanks in advance!

Should I stick with the diamond specs from above ($23454 from B2C) or is the whiteflash diamond below better? The color is 1 step down than what I'm looking for..
http://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut-loose-diamond-3016701.htm

This is the only AGS stone that is near the 4Cs that I'm looking for..I've looked through pretty much all the online sites already..anyone interested to shed any light?

Thanks!

That WF stone is beautiful, and a G will face up very white.

You'll never go wrong with a well-cut G color. That WF stone is very nice.

Does the GIA stone have the potential for the same beauty if the images were available? Its HCA score is 0.4 while the WF is 1.8.
It seems that AGS is preferred? The specs on the stones are quite similar I think...

So the WF stone looks like a H&A stone...but it is really not Hearts and Arrows right? The spec numbers indicate that it could be a H&A but WF is not calling it that..?
I have an appointment to see the WF stone tomorrow morning...please give me lots of advice so I know what to look for or questions I should be asking. What kind of lighting conditions should I be looking at the stone?

Thanks in advance!

The WF stone does not meet the WF exacting standards for a true H&A's, it is an AGSL Ideal which is the best cut but just a tic or two off, but still shows very nice hearts. It will be a beautiful diamond.

Would you see any difference from this stone to one of their H&A's?...Likely not, both are AGSL Ideal cuts with the H&A's having somewhat of a better symmetry to make their H&A. Some want that, maybe in the mind type of thing, it sounds good and they put their ACA on the lab report.

You have a great opportunity to view the diamond in person (most are unable to do so)...ask them anything that comes to mind, they are very good to work with, you can't go wrong.

NOTE: I see you have 2 different threads going on the same questions??

Update: I got to see the WF stone in person on Friday...beautiful  Thanks to MissGotRocks for bringing that stone to my attention.
I also got some images (ideal scope and ASET) with the other GIA stone..nowhere near as good as the WF stone.
While I was at the store, I saw a few other possibilities..would like to get some expert thoughts and advices on these..

When I compare the 2 stones, the ACA 2+carat look somewhat "frosty" while the 1.71 carat look "glass-like and see through" why is that? Is one stone better than the other due to that characteristic?

How does the 2+ carat stone look? Is that a good price for H VS2? Is the 2+carat stone too big for a size 4 ring? Thanks so much for your advice and comments.
