Hi...

I am starting to look at engagement rings and I could use some good advice :) I have tried to look at online jewelers but that won't work because I want to look at the stone and the setting in person before making a purchase. I live in Atlanta and went to Solomon Brothers. They seem to have a good selection but I would like to see other options if possible. Does anyone have any good suggestions of jewelers in Atlanta?

Solomon Brothers is offering me the following Round Brilliant stone for $9,661:
Carat 1.70
Color J
Clarity SI2
Lab GIA
Symmetry ex
Polish ex
Florescence Faint

Thoughts?

Thanks!

Union Diamond is also in Atlanta.

Brown and Co. Has beautiful stuff, but you pay a premium for that. Solomon Bros. and Union Diamonds would bevthwre only two I'd consider buying from if you want to buy locally. Are you open to buying online?

Union diamond is good ( :wavey: Hi Yenny!) Yenny and I met there and looked at stones. I have also been to Solomon brothers which is a nice store but you have to kind of wonder how much margin they have to make given where their store is. We looked at Union Diamond (which is up at 285 in Vinings) and Solomon - and ended up purchasing at Brian Gavin Diamonds without having seen the stones. Don't be afraid of virtual, in my opinion you get better product for your money.

Hi! I really like Worthmore Jewelers in Atlanta (they have a store in midtown and another in Decatur -- but they can get a little pricey). I also like Palas Jewelers in Buckhead (I have bought "fun" jewelry in there and the woman who owns the store is really nice and seems to be very honest -- they create engagement rings too and they work with some cool designers). Finally, I really think Bradley T. Harris has fair prices and does nice work. He's set some gemstones for me and he is super easy to work with.

So, my Atlanta list would be:

1. Bradley T. Harris Jewelers (he's out near Chamblee in a bank building, but it's worth the trip)
2. Palas Jewelers (they're in a little alley in Buckhead and can be tricky to find... But they're worth it!)
3. Worthmore in Midtown

Thank you all for your responses. This is very helpful! I actually did visit Union Diamond a while ago. They had a nice selection and good prices (from what I could tell). Regarding online jewelers, it's not that I am opposed to buying from them, it's that I really need guidance during the selection process and I am not sure that I will be able to get that online. Also, I don't know which online jeweler is good/reliable.

My budget is $13k for the center stone and maybe $2k for the setting. Solomon Brothers is now offering me a 2.0 carat stone, GIA, J, SI2, triple excellent with a 0.7 carat setting with prong set diamonds and a 4 prong mounting in 14k white gold. Everything for ~$15k. Is J a good enough color? Should I try to go for a better color and compromise a bit on the carats for the center stone? Or is there really not a lot of difference (to the naked eye) between a J, H and G? If you guys were to spend $13k on the stone, where would you focus your investment? Color? Size?

Sorry for all the questions. You can tell that I need help :(

Thanks again for your responses...you guys are awesome! :)

I'd focus on cut. Cut is what determines light return. And light return is what makes a diamond look whiter, larger and bigger.

So that is what I would maximize.

I'd stick to SI1 and not go down to SI2. And I'd maximize cut. And I'd shoot for 1.75-1.95 in size as you can the best deals just shy of the big 2 carat sticker jump.

http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut/1.91-carat-j-color-si1-clarity-excellent-cut-sku-241227 IF EYECLEAN. And since those are twinning wisps, not carbon (though they appear black from the reflection of the camera), would be a great buy. I'd put it on hold immediately (no cost or obligation) and request a gemologist tell you if it is eyeclean. And get an Idealscope image if it is.

http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut/1.82-carat-j-color-si1-clarity-excellent-cut-sku-240541 This one is lovely too. I'd put it on hold immediately (no cost or obligation) and request a gemologist tell you if it is eyeclean. And get an Idealscope image if it is. It scores a 2.5 with the HCA, and could be a very nice stone.

They are both just shy of 2 carats. Have the same dimensions as a 2 carat. . And have the high potential to be a gorgeous stone with excellent light performance depending on what the Idealscope shows.

JA has a ton of settings to chose from. I'd sure you can find something lovely.

They also have a 60 day no questions asked return policy. And free shipping both ways. So you can buy it with the peace of mind that if you don't love it. You have a risk free return policy.

I would highly recommend Diamonds Direct in Birmingham! They carry a ton of designers and have literally thousands of diamonds in house, so you can see anything you'd like. Their staff is excellent, not pushy at all, and very informative. What I liked most (besides the awesome prices) is that I felt like they truly wanted me to be happy with the diamond I got. I think it would be well worth the drive over to check them out. :))

There will be a very noticable difference in color from G/H to a J... I can't tell G from H when side by side, but an H next to a J is a different story. The J will have a tint when viewed from the side. A 4 prong will show almost all of the side, so I don't think a J is your best bet. I'd go with an I or better for that type setting. If you wanted to go halo or other setting that "hides" the sides a little more than a solitaire, then a J would look perfectly white face up. ;))

There is nothing wrong with a J (I have a 2.4 J myself), but the setting will affect how "white" the stone looks if it allows the sides to be easily seen.

EDIT: face up, it's very difficult to me to see a difference in a G/H/I/J in an excellent cut stone...

Thanks again for all your responses. I reached out to James Allen and requested the Ideal Scope images of the two stones that Gypsy recommended (thanks Gypsy :)) and a third one that they recommended. I've attached them. What do you think?

Also, when looking at stones, what dimensions should I go for (i.e. depth, table, girdle, etc)? Thanks!

1. Put that diamond on HOLD/RESERVE for you.
2. Ask if a picture is available, and if it is eye-clean.

Thanks JulieN! Yes it is eye clean. I have requested a picture. Is this a stone you would recommend?

Unfortunately Blue Nile does not have a picture of this stone.

The numbers are good. This stone is a virtual stone being listed at several online vendors. Do you have a vendor you would like to work with? Ask if they can call it in once the hold is released, and if they can do an Ideal Scope, and if they recommend the stone for purchase.

Thanks JulieN. You are right. I also found this stone on the Eternity Diamond website, but Blue Nile's price is a little better. Not sure why. I reached out to Blue Nile for a Ideal Scope image and unfortunately they told me that they are not provide such images for this stone. They do recommend it for purchase though. I asked them for other options that they would recommend based on my budget and preferences and they sent me these:

The 2ct stone appears to be the best of the three per Holloway. Nevertheless, I was avoiding diamonds with strong fluorescence because I was told that it made the diamonds appear milky. Is that not the case? Also, according to them all three stones are eye clean. I am a bit particular about visible inclusions. Would you agree with their assessment? Would appreciate anyone's thoughts on these three stones and preferences. Thanks again!

I got my ring from Mariloff (in Dallas, but there's an Atlanta location): http://www.mariloff.com/

They mainly have EGL diamonds in store but will call in GIA diamonds if you want them, and the prices are decent. The salesman we have worked with is totally fine calling in GIA ex/ex/ex that meet whatever parameters I give him (including angles, depth, etc). I have found that I have to be way overly-specific though in order to get what I want, but they're happy to work with that. They have a wide range of settings and imo they're pretty good quality - not as refined and perfect as some of the PS vendors, but way, way better than the average that you find. They do have the "wholesale" schtick, which is pretty annoying, but the final price they give you is totally decent.

You must have made a mistake. The 2.06 will have the best HCA score, but it is not good enough to call it in blind.

As I said, email your favorite Internet vendor with a copy of the GIA report. Ask them if they can get it once it is released from the hold and if they price match. The lowest price I saw for it was about 15.5 wire price from Adiamor. If you don't have a favorite Internet vendor, I suggest Brian Gavin Diamonds, or Good old Gold for their excellent photography setups.

Or you can order it blind from Adiamor or Blue Nile (check their policies on upgrades) and spend some quality time with the diamond.

Thanks distracts!

JulieN...you are right. I must have typed the wrong dimensions :( Let me see what I can do with the 1.92 carat one per your suggestion. Any thoughts on my concern regarding the strong fluorescence making the stones look milky? Is that true? Based on what you have seen, is the 1.92 carat stone the best option so far? Thanks!
