Hi All,

This is a great site and I appreciate all the information
on the site and in the forums. Also, please accept my apology
if this is an inappropriate post. (If so, I'd appreciate being
pointed in the correct direction.)

I'm engagement ring shopping...
I found a diamond that I like, within my budget and was hoping
that you folks more experienced with the diamond market could
help me decide on this value of this diamond. The asking cost
is $6,700 for a plain, heavy platinum band with this diamond:
1.18 Carats, GIA Certified
H Color
VS2 Clairty
Depth: 62%
TAble: 57%
Polish/Symm: VG
Girdle: thin - medium
Flour.: none
Meets the grade for a 1A cut
So I guess it's an "ideal cut"

Is this a reasonable deal, in your opinion?

Thanks so much for your help!

Unfortunately, I don't have the information in front of me
(or easily available). I'd have to call the jeweler to
obtain the info... and I've already called him twice to
get additional information about the diamond, so I'd feel
a little foolish.

I know that it meets all of the necessary criteria
for an AGA 1A Cut Grade... but that's the only additional
information I have available. Would you say that the
crown and pavillion angles are crucial information to
determining the quality of this diamond?

thanks so much for your help!

Cut Class 1A is excellent by all the traditional measures and a diamond which fits within that in all ways should be a very finely cut diamond. What it doesn't tell you as well as the HCA is whether the cut is the very best. AGA is excellent... but HCA is a finer grained tool for comparing the predicted performance of diamonds.

This isn't a criticism of the ACA grading. For human convenience that has to use convenient ranges and it came about well before the HCA did. The same applies to the AGS cut grades. They are as good as they could be with the generally available technology and industry desires at the time they were created.

Today there are better tools available and you're taking an unnecessary risk by not using them. Sorry, but I can't really advise anyone not to use the best available tools today rather than the best available tools of two years ago.

Thank you both for your time and attention. I sucked
it up and called the jeweler back.

Here is the additional information:
This was from a Sarin (sp?) report, per the
jeweler.

Depth: 62%
Table: 57%
Crown Angle: 35.2
Crown %: 15.2
Pavillion Angle: 41.5
Pavillion %: 44.2
Culet: 0.3%

Using the HCA calculator, this scores a 4.4.

Again, this GIA cert diamond and plain, heavy
platinum band is being offered to me at $6,700
in the Chicago area.

Is it a reasonable deal?

thanks

A 4.4? You can do better for the money for sure. I would suggest that you keep looking.

I just tried to revise my post, but couldn't. I did a search and found several close to what you were looking for but much better quality. Check the "AGS 0" and H&A on the front page when you search. It came up with a lot.:wavey:
