EDIT: Sorry, the topic should've stated "good diamond for an update?"

Hey everyone,

So, I was looking at some diamonds online and I saw a few that I might be interested in seeing in person. Before I did that though, I wanted to post some of the specs and if you guys could help me and tell me if they are decent specs. I'm on a tight budget for updating my diamond, but at the same time I want a bigger size and I don't want to sacrifice too much quality. I'm fine with inclusions as long as they aren't visible by just looking at the stone.

Also, how much do you think someone should pay for these diamonds? Thanks!

I have some more but if you can give me an idea about these first. Thanks so much!

Hi Ava

I would stick to GIA or AGS graded diamonds personally in the first instance, this link explains how the grading labs rank, EGL are said to be less strict on grading than the abovementioned labs in some cases.

Ditto, which is why it is discounted by the trade making it look like a good deal which probably it isn''t.

Can''t judge fancies without pictures and other things, like ASET or Idealscope. I would stick to AGS0 graded princess cuts myself.

You might want to narrow your specs. You have an E color and a J color there.

+1.

I''d also put forth that an extremely thin girdle on a princess is a guaranteed disaster.

Well, just based on the numbers, does anything stand out as odd? I actually prefer GIA but I want to be in the 2 carat range and only EGLs are meeting my budget. Also, I heard you can get a good EGL diamond... but you just have to be super careful. I''m going to see them in person to make sure there isn''t any major flaw in it, but I''m not 100% good with the numbers that tell you about the diamond. So, I wanted to ask you guys first before I waste too much time going there and then I find out that the table dimensions aren''t ideal, etc.

If you could please help me, that would be great! Thanks!

Thanks Yssie. I''m completely clueless about the girdle part, because it says extremely thin to very thick. So, is the girdle extremely thin or thick? Also, why is an extremely thin girdle bad on a princess?

It''s both, but in different places. Variance like this is a bad thing... there wasn''t too much care taken while cutting this diamond. Also, "extremely thin" translates to "extremely prone to chipping", which is even more pronounced on a princess cut with already vulnerable edges and corners.

Thank you so much! I definitely would want to avoid that. What about the rounds?

and also, what about this diamond. it''s a little bit smaller but it''s much cheaper. based solely on the numbers, do you see a reason why? thank you guys so much. I appreciate all your input.

Round girdles: Still want to avoid more than 2-3 grades of variance... thin - sl thick is the most you really want to look at. However, since there are no straight edges and corners, they are less prone to chipping (but still can).

Need crown & pavilion numbers to get any sort of idea 'from the numbers'; images are much better. Keep in mind that potentially loose EGL grading can mean it's an I-J SI1-2 diamond by GIA/AGS standards...

okay this is the EGL report for the 2.02 round diamond listed above. lemme know what you think. i''m thinking too many inclusions, but I''m not sure.

EGL Report.jpg

The stone you just posted the EGL cert on came out as a 2.1 on the HCA...

Factor Grade
Light Return Very Good
Fire Very Good
Scintillation Very Good
Spread
or diameter for weight Very Good
Total Visual Performance 2.1 - Very Good - Worth buying if the price is right

It is usually recommended to pass on stones that score about 2. Under 2 is worth further review. You do know that EGL
is considered to be light on their grading. Color and clarity can be off by 2 (we''ve actually seen them be off by more than 2).
EGL-USA is suppose to be better than the other EGL locations.

how much do you think this stone should be priced based on the report and considering that egl is off?

and i did consider that egl is off by 2. i actually saw another stone that was a G, SI2 EGL and it had some inclusions on the side, but nothing that turned me off by the stone. It was a beautiful stone. So, even though they''re pretty lenient, I still have hope that maybe I''ll get lucky with another SI2.

Your post above is the key to this whole thing and you certainly are not alone. Fortunately you are now among the lucky ones to have found PS so this situation can be fixed relatively quick.
I always encourage people to spend time in the knowledge section because I found it to be the very best diamond education tool available. It does take some time to go through but in the end it actually SAVES TIME. A day in the tutorial can save you a month of considering poor performing stones

Another advantage is it helps you to better understand the feedback recieved from the more experienced members we are so fortunate to have.
