Hi all,

My parents' 50th wedding anniversary is coming up in a couple of months. My mom has always wanted a 1 Ct diamond ring. Now is the time and I have been appointed the family ring shopper.

By way of background, I stumbled on this site several months ago in a search for my own anniversary band. Based on the wealth of information here, I recently purchased a 5 stone band from IDJ. My experience was fantastic and in line with everything people here have posted. In fact, Joey talked me out of a more expensive setting because she thought a simpler (and much less expensive design) would fit my lifestyle better. She was 100% correct. So glad I listened.

My inclination is to use IDJ for my mom's ring but could use some guidance from all of you. We talked to mom. She expressed certain preferences. Beyond that, she wants us to surprise her. Here are the basics:

Budget is $5k with some flexibility.

Diamond must be at least. 1 Ct. 0.99 = bad. 1.0 = fine. Does not matter that there will be no discernible difference in size. It's all psychological. In addition, bigger is better. Again, regardless of how it looks on the finger.

18k yellow gold. Halo style because blingier is better. bezel around the main stone to protect it. Relatively low setting. Size 6.5. No stones on the shank and no pave. Inspiration photo linked here:

She may be 70, but she has the energy of a 30 yo and is extremely active. She still works (because retirement is too boring t her) and uses her hands a lot. She can also be really, really hard on things. Showed her some double bezel rings. She did not like them despite the extra protection offered. In the inspiration photo, I think she really liked the slightly chunky larger size of the halo stones and the slightly rounded look the prongs provided.

She is completely fine with a bit of warmth. Given that she wants yg, How low would you recommend going on color? I assume that J/K would be fine. What about the L/M/N range?

I think excellent cut would Look utterly fantastic to her. No need for ideal. Any thoughts about going down to very good? Keeping in mind that, left to her own devices, she would probably select a mall diamond.

What about clarity? How low would you be willing to go? She is not likely to be overly bothered by imperfections, short of something like a salt and pepper look or large carbon inclusion on the table.

Also, given that there is almost no chance of any trading up in the future and that size is the most important consideration in her mind, what do you think about purchasing a 1+ Ct uncertificated stone from IDJ? A certificate would not be important to her at all. I'm trying to keep my personal preferences out of this decision and select something that will make her happy.

Thanks in advance!

This is my friend’s M color round set in 14k yellow gold. (Worst background color to demonstrate her stone, but she snapped them on the fly for me.) I think you can go down in color to maximize your budget. The only issue will be the halo melee, which tend to default at GHI colors.

I am only going to speak to the issue of getting an ungraded diamond: I would not advise it. There are many reasons, but I will stick to the simplest:

You said your mom is active. If she suffers a loss: a theft, a chip or other damage, or just misplaces the ring you will want your insurance company to replace the ring with a ring of the same quality that you are spending your time and energy to secure for her. If you have a lab graded stone with all the characteristics documented then the insurance company is bound to matching that quality in a replacement no matter who you work with.

Also, any one carat stone that is of truly excellent cut, like you want, will not be un-certed anyway. There is no financial incentive to take the time to cut an excellent standard and then sell it without a lab report that would increase its value by declaring that it really is "excellent." =)2

I think it's wonderful that your mother is getting her dream ring after all this time. Enjoy your journey!

Did she mind the color or color contrast with the inspiration in the inspiration? That is a light brown, so if she liked that, you certainly drop your color and look for a brown vs. yellow body color. Then, the contrast with the halo looks deliberate.

I'm guessing the setting will be $1500, so that leaves $3500 for a diamond. I'm posting a few example to ponder for color. I would not use JA to make this kind of custom setting. IDJ or David Klass are good options.

If yes, this might be a great option.

Does is need to be a round? Ovals will give her more spread for the weight. DBL makes lovely settings and may be able to work in your budget. For a lower color oval, I would suggest DBL as they know their fancies and won't steer your wrong. Posting a cute JA stone that might be worth viewing.

(7.93x3.64 mm, good ASET. DBL will tell you if there is any color concentration to worry about)

View attachment 613911 I’m one who loves “pre owned” for the value for money.
Here’s a lovely vintage ring, big centre diamond (1.17) plus extras for a very impressive ring.
It’s from Ivy and Rose in the US. Comes with an evaluation for around $16,000!
Cost is $5,500 but I think that a good price.
Just my “5 cents worth”.

I would contact David Klass for the setting. This is right up his alley, his price will be competitive, and he’ll be able to color match the melee.

IDJ has a couple of I VS2-SI1 stones that would fit the budget to include the setting, but no images. I would contact them and request pics.

This is all fantastic advice. She did not mind the color in the inspiration stone, so I definitely think we can go down on the color. Really appreciated the photos of the M stone.

Oval is a possibility. Better finger coverage would be a major plus. I was thinking of MRB simply for the sparkle factor. Will definitely check with David Klass along with IDJ.

Hadn't thought about the insurance angle. Makes the decision easy to go with a certificated diamond.

Looking forward to putting this together for my mom. After 50 years, I really want this to be a dream ring.

Thank you!

That is a lovely ring but looks like it's pre-owned. She is rather superstitious and would not like it. I also think that she would really like to hear that the ring was custom made just for her -- even if it is based on existing cads.

It is a PSer’s ring. She created with with love, but I don’t believe that she ever really wore it. Regardless, I understand if your mother is superstitious and would like something created just for her. Just a note that many diamonds in circulation have been pre-owned, or once “upgraded”, not to mention that they are 1-3 billion years old. I hope she understands that.
As I come from a superstitious family, a way to “clean” a piece of jewelery would be to run it through a running water. I don’t necessarily believe in superstitions, but can relate to people who do.

Everyone has given great ideas! It's really sweet of you to do this for your mom and for her to finally get her dream ring. If you are going to work with Diamonds by Lauren to find an oval, see if they can give you a quote on the ring since they work with a variety of craftsmen (with different pricing and skills) to compare it with David Klass.

Please stick with a round. You can get by with J-K color with a round, but in an oval, lower colors are going to show more. I'd stick with SI1 clarity. I'd go with IDJ as they can surely do a simple diamond halo and they have good diamond prices. Absolutely ONLY consider GIA Excellent graded stones. Give them the parameters below to get a great stone.

These are measurements to help you stay in ideal cut territory with a GIA excellent cut stone.
table: 54-58
depth: 60-62.3
crown angle: 34-35.0 (up to 35.5 crown angle can sometimes work with a 40.6 pav angle)
pavilion angle: 40.6-40.9 (sometimes 41.0 if the crown angle is close to 34)

Nice ring! The 4 prongs worry me a bit though. Would prefer a bezel or 6 or 8 prongs to reduce the risk of losing the stone. in the meantime, I ordered a couple of inexpensive rings for her to try out and see what she prefers.

Congratulations to your parents! =)2

I'm so glad your Mom was asked for her preferences.
After waiting this long, she should get exactly what she wants!

JA can customize that setting with a bezel, it just makes it non refundable.
