Hi this sort of has to do with my "advice" post. I went to see about getting my custom ring made and the jeweler said that white gold is stronger and would last longer for the prongs (originally I wanted yellow gold [about 14k] but he said I''d be getting it repaired every few years because yellow gold is so soft). Also he said it might hold the engraving better (not wear down so fast). Any comments/advice?

Thanks

I have 14K gold and it has been in beautiful condition for 6 years. No dings or nasty spots. It''s as beautiful as the day I bought it.

Keep in mind, with WG it will need to be rhodium plated every now and again.

I assume you mean your ring is 14k yellow gold? Is it engraved or have detailing (that could be worn down)? If so is that intact too (after 6 years)? I''m just looking at plain white gold (not rhodium plated). Any more advice/comments are welcome.

Thanks

My wedding band is 14K yellow gold and it has engraving (on the inside). I have been married 10 years and it has held up just fine.

I wanted to add...my husband has worn his ring for 10 years, every single day through work at the factory, boating and softball games...it looks good as new (except for a few minor surface scratches).

I''m looking at 14k white or yellow gold. I''m not a fan of the two tone look. I actually prefer yellow gold. I have a antique ring with engraving on it that is over 100 years old and the engraving (on the outside) has held up very well. I just don''t know if this is a rare thing (the yellow gold not wearing down). The thing is I''m just worried about the strengh of the prongs holding the stone (whether white/yellow is stronger) and also the engraving/filligree I''m having done on the ring/setting holding up over time. This is just a dress ring (not one I''d wear every day).

It's fine to use yellow gold for the shank, but if the stone is a diamond, almost always the prongs are white metal (either white gold or platinum). The white metal of the prongs will be less noticeable and will reflect white on the diamond instead of yellow. I think you should get whatever metal you want on the shank, but do go with white gold or platinum for the head (prongs).

Mine does not have engraving but it does have WG prongs. I just get it cleaned up very often. But I do wear it every day doing everything. It gets dirty and it gets banged off of things but it is still holding up fabulously. If you want yellow gold and that is your preference then I would go with it.

I''m no expert on WG as I don''t wear it, but I know my friends Ering is WG and she notices a yellow tinge to it because gold is well, gold and WG is mixed with some other metal I think to make it white. Don''t hold me to that though...

Let us know what you decide.
