Thank you, everyone. I think I will go ahead and not have it appraised before it''s set.

One other issue: I was told that when the diamond would be set it might break (small, small chance) - but if it does, it is not covered. So am I screwed if the person setting the stone chips/breaks it? Nothing I can do?

Thanks all!!
Brilyant..., make your purchase a positive experience..., sit down buckle up and enjoy the ride....

Mostly relax...

I know, I''m trying... it''s hard with all this "adversity" in a field I am not great with. I mean, I was practically told that if my diamond break I am s**t out of luck - how am I supposed to not worry?

Can you not find some setting at GOG, where they would take responsiblity for the stone?

get it insured before it''s set.....

GOG did not have the setting I wanted.

I was told that loose stones are not insurable.

Buy the setting & send it to GOG to set it ... since they sold you the stone, they will probably take the liability of setting it. Whoever makes the most profit has the most cause to assume risk.

jewelers mutual does offer a policy that will cover the stone while being set, you just have to keep them as your insurance for a certain amount of time afterward.

Doesn''t every jeweler make you sign a release before they set your stone stating just in case they chip the stone it''s not their fault as occasionally when the stone has a weakness this happens??
