Hi everyone,

I''ve gone ahead and plunked down for a GOG OMC. The stone is a 1.48 K VS1. I really like the shape of this stone even among the various great GOG OMC''s, but we''ll see if its a keeper once I see the K color in person. A link to the stone and the video are below:

Assuming I end up with this stone, or a similar stone thats instead something a little lighter (John tells me I won''t be disappointed!), now I must go on a setting search.

I have no real timeline, since I''ve probably got 6 months to get it all done, so no concerns there at least.

My GF''s latest decision (it changes...) is for a specific style she saw on another girl at her law school. It is a Mark Silverstein ring from their Gossimer collection, and her main attraction to the collection is the rings with multiple winding shanks. She thinks they are beautiful, doesn''t mind knowing there might be more upkeep over the life of it than other designs, and she thinks the open designs give her good coverage without being too blingy, and most importantly she thinks the space you can see through gives her hand a good appearance. She thinks solid wide rings, or stacked rings, give her hand a squat appearance.

You can see some of the designs here:

The specific one she was looking at isn''t there, but can be seen at his site. Its the #2084 ring (bridal section, group 12, ring on the left):

If anyone can insert a picture, go ahead. I personally liked

Does anyone know of designers making rings similar to this style?

Does anyone have experience with this designer? John at GOG said he had approached him before, but the designer seemed disinterested with working with a retailer that sells online, so that might complicate matters.

Another issue of course is how would you get the square peg into the round hole, and by that I mean getting a OMC into a design made for a round... would it probably require removing both the head and the halo under it? Is it a bad idea to try and cram new shapes into set pieces? Would someone like Leon Mege be capable of recreating this, and would that be cost prohibitive on a custom (this ring design already likely to be ~3k)?

Does anyone have any advice, any similar ring designs they know of, or have any general concepts of if I''m trying to put the wrong things together?

I know the OMC is supposed to be an antique, and I doubt these settings would ever qualify as being the normal home of an antique, but really my GF knows nothing of antiques, we never encounter any actual antiques (or many round stones really), and really I''m just aiming for a ring she loves that also is very unique.

Any comments, advice, recommendations, and warnings are appreciated! Thanks, and I''ll be sure to keep everyone up to date on my decisions, and maybe even use my fancy new 12mp canon to take a shot or too of the stone loose, once I get to see it in person.

Again, thanks in advance for your responses!

Whoops, can't even keep track of them, so many seem so similar. She preferred the #2085, which is the middle one of group 14, at the MSI website above. It's all flash so I unfortunately can't just link you straight there.

Anyways, if anyone has anything they would like to say, anything from whether or not they like that OMC or not, about Mark Silverstein rings, about similar rings, about trying to get a custom ring for an OMC, etc, please chime in!

Thanks!

Edit: and ignore the whole "moissanite lady" bit, thats just a convenient place to see some of the rings.

I don''t know anything about the setting, but the stone is gorgeous!

I''ve had my eye on that K vs1!

In my opinion it has one of the two best Asets of the current lineup of cushions (22 cushions including yours) - least light leakage and most red (red is good), plus the culet isn''t overwhelmingly large.

As I recall it didn''t show a lot of blue contrast in the aset, But I think you have a fine stone.

I was also a little hesitant about the color, I gues you can decide about that when you see it. Face up it should be fine.

Congrats on picking a nice rock!

I felt some encouragement to head down to I and below thanks to two things:

1 - This site! Along with images of others stones of lower color, particularly the OMCs, which seem to love being J/K colored.

2 - When at Tiffany''s, the sales lady stuck a colorless (cant recall if it was D/E/F) ring next to an H and asked my GF to see the difference (mounted). My GF couldn''t tell, even side by side, what was the H and what was colorless (I could). This made me realize I wouldn''t buy above a G/H for certain, and made me wonder about I/J/K.

Combine those with my girls "permanent tan" (Persian), and I''m feeling confident but unsure about a K. Only 1 way to find out!

Wow! I love those settings, let me know what you find out about having them re-created!

It seems I might have to use a multi-vendor approach, but at least I can always send it back to GOG for a fitting no matter where I get the ring (for a modest fitting fee plus round trip shipping, very reasonable and nice to know).

As far as having the stone to see, I received it today and am looking at it at work (office florescence), and it's just stupidly beautiful. I've popped it out of my desk a few times to look, and it actually makes me laugh when I see it. It even shows fat fire when I stick it on my desktop under my desk with little light at all.

No matter how it goes from here, I would like to thank this forum for giving me the knowledge to make me feel like I am informed as I go about my business. That feeling results in a sense of confidence and accomplishment, that has turned what would have seemed as just a large expense, into something I will cherish just as much as the little lady.

I'll refresh this thread to keep people up to date. I'll try some photos once I get the SD card for my new camera next week. Thanks all!

ETA: GOG sent me a free loupe, and a seriously top notch little package with the stone. Kudos to them, really nice setup. The stone came with a box and a stone holder too (which I accidently shifted the stone in already a bit, but whatever).

Have you thought out what she''s going to do with a wedding *band* and that setting? Sometimes folks get swept away in designing a super unique E-ring only to find that no wedding band looks right with it and then have to re-set the e-ring when they go to pair it with a band.

How large/long are her fingers? Maybe I''m looking at the wrong settings but it seems like they''ll take up so much space on the finger that another band won''t even fit with it at all!

I''d advise going with an engagement ring that will work with a large array of wedding bands.

Here''s the one your future fiance likes ... for reference

Gorgeous diamond! I love the setting your GF likes as well.

Ooops .. now you say 2085 ... okay, this one is 2085

Yes, her intentions are to have a complex e-ring setting, and NO band. She wants to have matching bands with me, and she can choose to wear the stone or not somedays, and then the plain band is worn those days.

She has no intention of ever wearing more than 1 ring at a time, she doesn't really like it.

Her fingers are a bit short, thus the reasoning behind the one open band, it covers a lot, but unlike a stack or a fat band, gives her hand an appearance she likes.

She has also approved of these ring designs (2 versions I have found):

and the one on the left:

Designs of this type, which look like 3 rings in one, really don't lend themselves to any extra rings on the hand either.

Sounds like a fine plan then. It would be best if somehow GOG could order what you want through the vendor itself. Alternately I guess you could see if they sell through a Brick & Mortar jeweler near you --- attempt to get the designer to set your stone (they may need it anyway to fit the head/basket properly).

Its such a unique & delicate design I do NOT think I''d try to have it reproduced. The Knox ring looks like a good back up plan. Though I prefer the curvier designs to complement the curves of the cushion. The hard lines of the Knox one & the Silverstien one you like seem at odds with the cushion shape. It works with a round because of stark contrast -- there''s a more subtle contrast with a cushion that wouldn''t have the same effect IMHO. Curvier & asymmetrical seems a better match with the cushion you picked out (lovely!).

Here are a couple more options. This is from Tacori.

A cousin of mine has an e-ring with a similar style setting and she also wears no band with it. Looks beautiful! (FWIW, I don''t wear a band either. You do occasionally get asked when the wedding is, but not that much!)

Hey GoSharks (SJ?) - any update? I''m very interested in pursuing a Silverstein ring, but question my nearest authorized dealer''s reputation. GOG was a no go with them huh? Too bad.

Oh my!!! Just gotta tell you that that diamond is AMAZING!!! Good luck on the setting hunt and you did a great job on that diamond!!!
