GOG Consignment ... Excellent Experience

TC, I hear what you are saying, but IMO a spectator gossiping and criticizing someone else's transaction is different than a buyer saying harsh things to the seller during negotiations.
The later may be nothing more than a negotiating tactic.
People vary, and some people hold nothing back when negotiating.

IMO, anything a buyer and seller say to each other during negotiations is perfectly fine.
When negotiating I have a thick skin and don't take anything personally, even when buying a house or car, which can become very heated especially since you are negotiating with a professional negotiator in a new car sale.

I once heard that if the buyer didn't get the seller a little upset then the buyer paid too much.
That's kind of harsh, especially in America where we can be more polite and diplomatic about negotiating than in some other countries, but I see some truth in it.

A buyer is not a monster for wanting a lower price and neither is a seller is a monster for wanting a high price.
Business is business.

Both parties want the best deal so they bicker and arrive at a price, or they part ways.
As long as no guns are involved nobody is doing anything wrong.

This is probably an extremely long shot, but maybe I'm the one who got it.

I got my diamond from a Chicago jeweler, who got it from a guy in New York, who had gotten it from a customer selling it. ;)

No, you did not get Kenny's stone, I promise. :)) Aside from the fact it is very different than the stone you bought, there are huge diamond suppliers in NY and millions of diamonds. Most jewelers will call in stones from NY. So the chances would have been one in millions that you would have bought Kenny's stone. But I am positive you did not!

Hi Kenny, I just ran across this thread and was wondering if you considered selling it on your own first or if you went straight to GOG? I'm debating if I should do that myself. The stone I have was purchased at GOG, will they still let me set the asking price for it? Are you allowed to say what GOG charges for consignment fee? Thanks!!

Yes, GOG will let you set the asking price for it.
They may give an opinion if you ask.
IIRC, they asked me what I wanted to sell it for and I replied with a price and with comps to support the price.
Remember that they are not buying the stone and you don't get paid till it sells.
That means it will sit in their vault next to stones that they paid for, so if yours takes a long time to sell because the price is high it's no skin off GOG's back ... though they do have costs associated with having it such as insurance.

I did not consider selling it myself since everything I read here on PS says you will get much less.
Why throw money away if I'm in no hurry to sell?

Ask Jonathan at GOG what they will charge you for selling your stone.
I'd guess they consignment percentage will vary with the desirability, salability, the the value of your stone.

x% of $1,000 is much less than x% of $100,000, so I would expect consignment percentages will be higher with a less expensive stone since the seller's costs are fixed for any stone, but you have to ask GOG.

I will add that when I sold my diamond, my plan was to use the proceeds for another diamond. In that case, my consignment fee was less than if I had asked for the proceeds in cash. We priced my stone at market value. I also had the option of accepting or rejecting offers, and I did reject some offers before accepting one.

My original plan was to buy that 2.38 ct Octavia. :naughty: :cheeky: :lickout: :errrr:
But when my diamond finally sold the 2.38 was gone. ;(

May be just as well.
If I bought the 2.38 I would have just sat on my fat @ss on on the floor of an aisle at Costco and stared at it till I died of thirst and hunger.

GOG.

Sorry I am not sure what policies GOG sent it off with and out of respect for the buyer, who may or may not read PS, I do not want to identify the stone.

Luckily I bought it around 7 years ago before huge price increases.
