I am somewhat new to this site. My husband just upgraded my diamond to a .80. I LOVE it. I have had some questions and everyone here has helped me so much. Thank you!!

Today I took my diamond to a local jeweler (not who we bought it from, they are in Seattle we are in VA.) This jeweler cleaned it for me then I asked her to look at it under the gem scope (I think that is what they are called.) She told me my diamond was poorly cut and she would be willing to take it in as a trade in for one of her "Ideal Cut" diamonds. Just for fun I asked to see one. I have to say my diamond was prettier. Better color and sparkle by far! My diamond is 6.01X6.09X3.66mm. It is 60.5%depth and 59%table. I know the girdle at very thin to slightly thick isn''t the best but that is how it is. She told me that my diamond was just TOO deep. What do you think? Is it? I can''t believe that it is. It just sparkles like mad!

I have a 0.75 carat diamond that''s GIA certified and is ideal cut. My depth is 59.4% and my table is 57%. I can''t really tell you if she''s right or not because I''m no expert at diamonds, but I figure my specs can help you compare somewhat, or at least give you an idea of what an ideal cut stone is supposed to be (even though it''s a little smaller than yours).

I think this jeweler is a dreadful boor and an embarrassment to the profession. NEVER is this appropriate behavior.

Thank you all for making me feel better! I KNOW that my diamond is beautiful! I have 20/20 vision LOL! It has great light return and wonderful sparkle. Sometimes I look at it and it seems to be glowing. Oddly it seems in dim light it glows very well. I don''t know if the cut or color does that but it is rather cool.

Total Depth % for AGA-1A is 58 - 62.3%, with the midpoint being at 60.2%. I''d say the depth of your diamond is near perfection at 60.5%. My personal opinion is that she just had "sour grapes".

Thank you for your input! She just made me feel like an idiot. Like my diamond was a second class piece of cut glass. She was more than happy to take it as a trade though. I guess when it comes down to it.....my husband bought it for me and there isn''t anything that could make me give it up.

karen when you say you can see it in dim light almost like it's glowing...it seems from the specs you gave that it may be a slightly more white 'brilliant' cut with the high table and lower depth combo, my old BIC stone used to be very bright in dim light, like a whitish bright glow...

funny about the depth being too deep, that depth is actually a number i prefer when looking for stones. i prefer a smaller table, more around 55 or 56, but it's just my preference....having had my old stone with a larger table and smaller depth. however, some experts like DBL swear by a 60/60 cut with good angles. frpm what you have said, i'm sure your diamond looks better than what this gal was trying to show you if she thinks 60.5 is TOO DEEP!

My diamond is a modififed round brilliant per the GIA cert. I know that it has "extra" facets in the lower half of the diamond that according to the jeweler give it "extra" sparkle and fire. I have to say that I don''t believe anything I hear and only half of what I see but this diamond really is "on fire." My husband was joking the other day that we could use it as a flashlight in a power outage. LOL! I have only had the diamond just over a week now and I just love it!

karen, a modified round brilliant...interesting! is it branded like an eighternity or another extra-faceted diamond? it may say on the GIA cert if there is an inscription on the girdle. also if it''s a branded MRB then it should have something listed on the GIA cert? if it''s a modified round, quite possible the jeweler may not have even have known exactly what she was looking at!!

the important thing is that you adore it and it sounds like you do. it''s fun to go into jewelers sometimes and see what they do or don''t know..maybe the next jeweler you visit will recognize a ''gem'' when they see one!

Well since Lenoid would have to delete my post if I said what I was thinking I will say this: it is your stone, no one elses. All that matters is that you like it and enjoy it. Personally I think it sounds lovely and since you do too I would say perhaps it is time to start looking for a jewler with a bit more tact.

I am not sure what an eighternity is? I know that my diamond has 8 extra facets on the lower half of the stone. The sad part about this jeweler is that they are an AGS jeweler. I found them by looking at the AGS web site.

It seems that many jewelers respond to any questions about the quality of a stone bought elsewhere with, "You got ripped off; you had better come do business with me." It makes sense in a way. Did the cleaning and quick inspection yield any $ for the jeweler? Probably not much if anything. So she thought she''d give it a shot. Of course, condemning your diamond but then being willing to take it into her own stock is contradictory and reveals that she''s speaking BS.

And no, 60.5 is not considered too deep (even by Fred Cuellar standards! . . . sorry, PS joke). 61.5 is not considered deep. 62.5 might be getting there, and 63.5 probably would be, but you are nowhere near the deep end! If she had said that the table was too large, that might hold some water (not saying this is true -- stones with your depth and table percentage can score below a one on the HCA meaning they are considered to have an excellent cut -- it just all depends on the crown and pavilion angles which we don''t know). Yeesh. Don''t go back there!
