Hi. My name is Ken. I have a question. How important is a girdle? I have read that it is not important as long as the width and depth are ok as it may just make it look smaller and I have read that it hides the light which is not what I want. I have purchased this loose diamond for $1500.

.51 carat
Measurements: 4.22-4.26*3.27mm
Depth: 77.7%
Table: 72.5%
Girdle : Ex. Thick
Clarity: VS2
Color: D
Flouresence-none
Clarity Characteristics: Needle, Chrystal Finish
Polish and symmetry: Good

The depth and table are both good in the chart that I have. Would it make a huge difference to get the table and depth to excellent?Just wondering if it makes that big of a difference as it was kind of difficult for me to tell when I was comparing this diamond to one of a diamond with excellent a across the board. The jeweler said that my diamond I had would not be as brillant over the years.

Thank you for your help in this frustrating process!

I forgot, this is a princess cut diamond.

Can't tell much except that it sounds like a mediocre stone. A uniform Ex. Thick is a great telltale sign of a poorly cut diamond. Polish/Symmetry are only Good.

I won't hope for much. Get an ASET image to convince yourself.

The extra thick girdle is a device used by some cutters to pick up extra weight in a diamond.

Without spending a lot of time to do all the math I would guess that this stone would normally weigh between 0.45 - 0.47cts if it had a normal girdle. That would put it below the "magic" 0.50ct size and dramatically decrease its value, so even poorly cut, it is worth more than a properly cut princess of less than 0.50cts.

The price may seem good but the stone is not going to look as large as it should for the weight that it has, and it will not light up the room in all probability. Still, as always, it is impossible to know without seeing the diamond. I hope that you bought it with a good return policy, if not, your are closing your barn door after the horse is gone...
