girdle thickness and symmetry

how important is girdle thickness? what is the best thickness for a princess cut diamond?
also, is good an acceptable grading for symmetry?

If its graded by GIA, extremely thin girdle might mean "knife edge" (no girdle plane), which means some sorth of weakness..., the setter must be very carefull as the girdle may chip when being set and if the ring gets a blow it also might chip. I would suggest to avoid Extremely thin girdle''s



Good symmetry is very much ok as far as the symmetry of a "Princess" is concerned, its not perfect...., but again, i dont believe perfect diamonds exists!!!

I would stay away from an extremely thin girdle in anything, most especially a princess. Medium to slightly thick is your best bet. Princess corners are susceptible to chipping, and an extremely thin girdle will not help.

I am a purist for cut, so Good in Polish or Symmetry would not get the job done for me. JMHO

Zach, there are four girdle planes on a Princess cut diamond..., the manufacturing process involves quite a few steps..., if the diamond is not balanced a hundred percent in the preliminary stages of the process, you sometimes get un-eveness of thickness between the four girdle planes..., not critical...., but that is one of the reasons it didnt get an EX, grade in symmetry...

Very unfair comment on your side...

!st. you cant judge the price of a diamond (especially a fancy cut ) prior to seeing and judging it with you eyes....

2nd. the difference between 4.5-5.K and 4K is not considered "MUCH too much"

I would friendly suggest to you to try not getting involved in pricing of diamonds..., its a whole world out there..., that princess can be a gorgeous stone and well worth the money as it could be a flop.

But i dont thinlk its fair to any vendor for blind comments like these...

Thanks a lot for all your help, i''ll still take a look at the diamond tomorrow and explain my apprehensiveness of the very thin girdle. As you say, it may be a gorgeous stone and a great deal, but if it''s not, I''ll have the broker find stones with thicker girdles. I really appreciate your insight and your unbiased comments.
