So, I have yet another question regarding round stones. I found a lovely 1.25 carat stone, and when I use the HCA (angles of crown and pavillion, table and depth), it gets a .9. However, the girdle is listed as medium to thick (AGSL). There is also another stone that is 1.14 carats that scores below a 2 on the HCA, and it is listed as having a think to medium girdle (GIA). Is the medium to thick girdle worse than the thin to medium, and am I actually better off going with the smaller stone? I didn''t even know anything about this whole girdle issue until yesterday. Sometimes ignorance is bliss!

Thanks in advance for any guidance!

Don''t worry about girdles. As long as it is not extremely thin or extremely thick you are fine. Variation in girdles is normal and will not affect optical performance. It is possible that with a thicker girdle some minute amount of carat weight is being "held" there in place of in the face up size of the stone, but this is only a real concern with extremely thick girdles.

Hi again Butterstick!

Personally I prefer thin to medium, thin to slightly thick but the overall cut is more significant. The time to be concerned if if you encounter extremes such as extremely thin or extremely thick etc as Dreamer mentions. What I would do if you wish, post all the info on each diamond here when you have it and we can look them over for you.

You might also find this article helpful from the Pricescope Tutorial concerning girdle thickness.

No, different ways the 2 lab measures girdle. GIA measures the thinnest part of the valley for the variation in thickness, AGS measures the thinnest valley and the thickest hill for the girdle variation.

Also, who gives the thickness description? AGS will not award a stone AGS0 grade for a stone with a thick girdle variation.
