The diamond that I am probably going to get is not GIA laser inscribed. I''ve never had a GIA diamond before, all the other ones I''ve gotten were AGS and they all had inscriptions in it. Is this normal for GIA to do this for a 1.65 ct diamond?

Thanks for any info!

I went to the GIA website. Evidently laser inscription of the girdle is added by the GIA at the request of the owner of the diamond when the diamond is submitted for grading. A GIA Graded diamond may or may not be laser inscribed.

The addition of an inscription on the girdle edge of a diamond is optional at all laboratories... All major gemological laboratories offer inscription services upon request, but will not add an inscription to a diamond without the express written consent of the person or company submitting the diamond for grading because doing so would alter another person's property without authorization.

There are several options for adding an inscription to a diamond after it has been graded by a laboratory, you can send it back to the laboratory, but in the case of the GIA it is rather expensive to do so because they charge about $35.00 for the inscription plus the cost of re-grading the diamond if the lab report is more than thirty days old... The AGS will provide the service for diamonds they have already graded quite reasonably (they are such a nicer laboratory to work with than the GIA, much more customer service oriented in our opinion and more responsive to our needs). David Atlas aka "Old Miner" here on PS of Accredited Gemological Appraisers (AGA) in Philadelphia offers verification and inscription services (see the "appraisers" link at the top of this page) and Nancy Woolery aka "Laser Lady" here on PS at VeraScribe offers inscription services. Lots of options... Hope this helps!

As you've now realized it is normal--GIA does not do the inscriptions like AGS--but for a slight fee your vendor can most likely do it (White Flash did it for us).

Thanks for the info, everyone.

Researcher - I will definitely ask WF to see if they can laser inscribe it for me.
