GIA Cert and HCA scores

Thoughts on whether or not a GIA diamond graded "very good" cut, "very good" polish and "excellent" symmetry and scores 1.0 on HCA should be considered? I"ve come across so many GIA "excellent" graded cuts that score way to high on the HCA tool and are rejects. Thoughts anyone?

Yes, some GIA VGs can certainly be beautiful stones worth considering! Just as many PSers would reject some GIA EXs. Stones really do have to be evaluated individually.

In this case the Thick girdle is an immediate demotion to VG. Overly thick girdles are undesirable because they hide weight: they don't contribute to spread or to improving light return. Slightly-overly-thick girdles aren't, however, detrimental to light return... very thick girdles are unsightly, entrap colour, and can create some odd windowing effects (because on tilting the stone the crown and pavilion facets are skewed into an offset, vs. "meeting" at the "girdle plane"...)

No flags in the numbers otherwise

Oh, that's lovely - marked down for polish, apparently.
But... the good thing about diamonds, and the people selling diamonds... they always have more to sell! I'm completely confident that you'll find the right one for you

A PSer wanted to sell a GIA VG some months ago that spawned quite a long thread - the reason for demotion wasn't apparent from the report. That was an interesting stone Let me see if I can dig it up...

Hi DesertGirl,

Just for future reference. If a diamond's looks good overall based on proportions with Excellent symmetry/polish. That means there are 2 likely possibilities for it to be graded as Very Good.

1) The girdle is thick.
2) This diamond didn't display fire/brilliance to a standard that achieved Excellent standards during observational analysis.

^should be ok, you don't want a thick girdle because that's where some of the weight is- which is bad.
