Hi,

After searching some diamonds at some PS vendors, I noticed that some type of GIA/AGS certificate that don''t list the cut grade.

What is the difference with this type of certificate? Is it a partial certificate or just a certificate with lower requirements?

I wonder what is the reason for sellers(or the lab) to provide a certificate without the cut grade. Is it because these stones are typically of inferior cut so it''s better not to mention it?

Would you advise not to get diamonds with certificate that doesn''t state its cut grades?

Thanks.

GIA offers a cut grade for round brilliants only.
This started in 2006 so reports pre-2006 don't have a cut grade. You can use this report check service to see info for some rounds pre-2006.

AGS offers two reports for shapes they cut grade.
1. The DQD includes all measurements and a cut grade (which includes grades for light performance, proportion factors and finish).
2. The DQR includes all measurements and finish grades but no light performance grade or overall cut grade.

Why a DQR instead of a DQD? If the diamond has cherry proportions that typically receive 0 in light performance it may not have had ideal polish or symmetry. If it has cherry proportions and EX/EX in polish & symmetry the DQR may have been requested simply because it costs less, allowing the diamond to be priced more competitively. If the proportions are at an outer limit it may not have been able to qualify for 0 light performance and that could be why a DQR was requested. It's a reasonable question to ask the seller.

Thanks a lot John for the explanation.

So is there a similar report check service for AGSL?

Now that you mention it, yes. They launched one at the end of March. Thanks for the memory jog.
