Getting "balls" installed on ring tomorrow

I am getting two balls installed on ring tomorrow. Is it rude for me to tell the jewar I want to stand and watch him due it? My stone is etched but I still want to be there when he does it. Peace of mind.

Most jewellers do not do their work right away because they have a list of other jobs to complete prior to yours. It is also unlikely for the bench to allow a customer into their work area. There are other ways to ID your diamond other than the laser engraving; measurements and inclusion plot.

The jeweler's insurance probably prevents him from having anyone other than employees in the workroom, even if he wanted to do that and could drop what he was doing and move you to the front of the line.

Reputable jewelers aren't going to swap out your diamond. And the larger/costlier your diamond is, the less likely it is that the jeweler would even have something that could be swapped out. Not saying it couldn't ever happen, but it's just not likely. If you think the jeweler would do that, you're using the wrong jeweler.

+1 to Libby

Not likely the bench would risk their reputationon swapping out a stone -- but "never say never" right? Can you call and ask if it can be done while you wait?

Ditto to those who said it's not likely that you can be in the bench room while work is being done.
If you have any questions whatsoever about the honestly of the shop, don't let them touch your ring.
There's plenty of ways to check the out- do a google search, yelp, etc

One additional note- not to give you additional stress....but....is there any way you can have the manufacturer add the balls?
This is particularly important if the ring has micro pavé on the band.
We've had cases of high end shops adding balls to a micro pavé shank, and polishing too much- which caused stone loss.
If there's no pavé on the band it's probably nothing to worry about.

The subject line of this post makes me lol every time I see it.

Me: someone on my pet forum is having balls installed and wants to watch while they do it for peace of mind.
His response: they never install them evenly anyway

I think it says alot when you don't feel you can leave your ring there. And if I were the jeweler honestly I would turn your buiness away if you asked me that. Not to be rude, but honest- if you have clients who are picky and unfront show they have no faith in you + they are suggesting you don't have values then I would terminate that relationship as it doesn't matter how good of a job they do, it probably won't make them/ you happy.

Are we really talking about balls still?  Can't believe you guys went there!!! And I bet this thread will get 500 + views because of it!

What is it with people worrying about their diamond getting swapped? Was this on TV or something? Urban legend? :read:

I don't think so. I think for most people besides a car and a house this is the largest (and probably the most important) purchase one will ever make so they feel the need to protect it.

From the jeweler's point of view- all they do is view diamonds. And whatever it is you are sporting I'm sure they have seen in a million times over. I'm not sure what if any profit they would make in switching your diamond, PLUS they would be hit with who knows how many legal fees, BBB issues etc plus probably loose more business then they would even realize if word got out to the community. Look at BGD and how often they are recommended here. What would happen if 1 person said they thought their diamond got switched. I can assure you that would impact their business.

FWIW I have only known of 1 person who said this happened to. Had her diamond for 40 plus years and had it reset at a local shop in MA. She got the ring back and swears it is not the same one though she doesn't have a lab report or anything to prove it. The jeweler met with her and said he swears it's the same one but if she feels better he will bring in 3 or 4 more that are similar and she can pick the one she wants to swap out. I thought it was handeled very nicely considering it was just her word saying it wasn't the same diamond.

There is a watch brand name "BALL",now imagine a thread title on a watch forum..." I wanna show off my new BALL :!: "

Years ago I had a ring adjusted with sizing balls. They were put at about the 4:30 and 7:30 position. Unfortunately this wiped out the maker's hallmark - had I know that would happen, I might have chosen another option. Just be aware that your sizing balls will probably be put in that general vicinity unless you specify otherwise.

And yes, the title of the thread did catch my eye :wink2: .
