Nope! I was in Tanzania in February. So freaking hot! The flies -yikes!

This would be interesting, but as a one-off stop. I read Roger Dery's account of it and he said it's very physically demanding. I wouldn't mind watching or maybe trying to dig, but only briefly.

well when i was in South Africa about 30 years ago i went out with a mine inspector and i saw diamonds in the rough, like out in the bush

also i went down the deepest gold mine in the world, the Vaal reef, very proffesional tour facilities for visitors, i dont have the photos but i rode on like a jigger shoulder to shoulder with the miners and also got a go at a pnumatic drill on the actual seem
it was very hot and wet down there, i shared a drink with a minner

DS did a research project -- with field work -- on a natural resource controlled by warlords in the DRC. We didn't sleep well 'til he was off the continent.

I would do a glamping-ish African "safari" -- one of our goals that we may age out of -- but not a down-and-dirty gem-mining one, tbh.

Whenever I think of the Congo, I'm reminded of that terrible 90's movie by the same name. Even Tim Curry couldn't save it. Anyway, it put me off the country. lol

P.S. I'm glad your boy returned safely... what an interesting study it must've been though.
