I am only familiar with the Gem Mines around the USA.
A very good book source is the 4 volume set titled "The Treasure Hunter''s Gem & Mineral guides to the U.S.A." Each volume lists for $14.95 (Northeast, Northwest, Southeast, and Southwest). Most of the places you have to pay a fee to dig in the gem mine, and most of these fees range from $5/day (Crater of Diamonds, Murfreesboro, Arkansas) to $50/day (Royal Peacock Mine, Virgin Valley, Nevada). There are lots of other good books on this subject. But these 4 books would be a good start.
