Newbie here!!! I would like to open my own gemstone business in the near future. Is it necessary to become a Graduate Gemologist, or have a Gemologist Diploma before getting started?

What are some of the best gemologist programs out there?

Yes, I recommend the GIA GG course. In the course of your business, you’ll need the knowledge and training to verify that the items you purchased for resale are genuine, check for treatment, learn about identification, colour and all its nuances so you know the quality and its worth, history, and etc.

yep you will need some kind of formal training...like chrono said GIA GG course is what you need...it couldn''t hurt to work or apprecintace under a jeweler too. Let us know what you plan on doing...where do you live at..some of the larger cities have the lab classes that you need to take so you don''t have to go to NY or CA

I''m currentl living in Kuwait, so I plan on taking the online courses. I''m going to purchase the items I need for the gem identificaton lab, and go to Thailand for the labortory. It looks like Thailand is the closest place for me to go, and thats great. Lab and vacation in Bangkok at the same time!!!

That’s great. It’s good to have some time gaining hands-on experience with a jeweller as well after the course is completed.
