OK - just unwrapped the garnet minutes ago and here are some quick pics. What do you think? I'll hold off on my thoughts for a bit.
10.5 x 7mm in WF mounting. BTW - Dana (at Master Cut Gems) is just fantastic to work with!
Well, I like the colour in the last picture best - it looks somewhat dark, and even brownish in the first few pics, but that doesn't mean that it is. It looks like it is a little thin up top, so to speak? That could just be the way the stone is sitting, but looks like you'd have an airline at the point, but not at the bottom. In the second shot, it looks like a perfect fit! I'd love to see more pics, and hear your thoughts, but can be patient.
I think the fit of the stone should be fine since jbkhere plopped the stone in temporarily just so we can see what it looks like. I'm not quite sure what to say about the stone. It's well cut but the colour is lacking. It's definitely not red on my monitor and whatever hints of pink I can see is desaturated. Then again, your options are very limited because you are looking for a specific shape, specific measurement and have a specific budget.
When I opened the box and unwrapped the stone I thought it was BEAUTIFUL! When I put it in the ring it went blah. I guess its the mounting is sucking the color and sparkle out of the stone. I'm sad to say but I think I'll have to send it back.
I've been looking at that garnet for ages, but like most red garnets, it appears from your photos to be dark in a lot of lighting. Also, I'm sure it would look at whole lot better in a yellow gold mounting.
Most red garnets have brownish secondary, at least they are not the most expensive stones. It looks dark in my monitor, but honestly, all red garnets I saw were on the darker side, and significantly darkened in a setting.
I really wanted to love it, garnet is my daughter's birthstone. Someday she'll get it all anyway so I thought it'd be nice if one was just for her
Its 2.75 carats.
You know, JBK, all things considered, you found that stone fairly quickly. It is not a calibrated size and yet you found one to fit your lovely mounting. So now if you do send it back, you've learned something and are better off than before, that you'll need to focus on gems that look good in white metal; and, since it appears the setting darkens stones, to look for something a little lighter than your "perfect" color.
I for one have been impressed with your diligence and the speed with which you found that stone. I just feel like another bus is coming right along for you, probably right around the corner...
If it doesn't set you on fire then it should go back. your opinion is the only one that matters.
I personally really like it. I think its lovely in that setting and looks a regal burgundy in color. Admittedly that is probably not what you were searching for.
Thank you Minous and Chel!
Your thoughts both are exactly what I felt. When I put the stone in the ring I knew immediately that I was not on fire. So I thought about it and realized - well now I know better what to look for in the next stone. Go lighter than I think I'd like. So the hunt continues!
Thank you all for your suggestions and help along the way!
