Looking at a couple of stones however, the slightly larger one is a G colour and the other is an F. Can you tell an F as noticible whiter mounted or unmounted than the G or would it be hard to see the difference?

Thanks

If they''re graded properly and the G isn''t hugely larger, then you probably won''t notice the difference. Plus, one you get one or the other and have nothing to compare the stone with, I doubt you''ll notice any hint of color at all.

Thanks Hest , one is a 1.15 and the other a 1.25 so not much size difference. Both AGS cert so color should be spot on. fingers crossed

Hi Dominic.

The short answer is that most people will have a hard time distinguishing colors 1 grade apart. This is especially true if the same lab graded both stones.

Just FYI: Two things that can make a difference in the appearance of color are the cut of the diamond and the presence of fluorescence. A stone which is extremely well cut may appear a color or two better than the grade it was given due to great light return. Additionally, some people find medium or strong blue fluorescence desirable in a stone because that quality can make it appear more colorless (though this is typically seen with lower colors). The caution against fluorescence is to make sure it does not make the stone appear milky or cloudy if it''s present.

Thank you John. The G stone is a Hearts and Arrows & score 1.3 on the HCA. Would that mean then that it could appear like say an F or E, being a good cut or, when AGS graded it they may have given it a G because the cut made it look like a G when really it''s say a H for example?

For color grading, diamonds (except for fancy colors) are placed table-down, looked at from the side and compared to a master stone set. Therefore it is a G which could appear even better face up.

Sounds like a great diamond.
