funny?

I hate those devices that spy on us 24/7, and sends it over the Internet to Big Data. :angryfire:
Creeps me out!

The post is funny. The acceptance of Alexa into homes without any question of repercussions is frightening.

Definitely funny.

And, I shall be putting this into practice.

ETA: can Alexa be turned off?

MIL wanted a Dot and didn't understand that in order to hear you it must always be listening to you. She decided against it after talking to me, but that she didn't get that beforehand really scared me. How many people haven't thought this through?

My capstone project involves Alexa. Not my idea.

The Alexa has a button you can push to turn it "off" and another to tell it to not listen. Do I believe they work? I haven't seen their software so can't say for sure. In theory, you can turn them off. I choose to unplug my dot when not testing my project because I am not sure enough for my comfort.

Thanks TP.

I had to look it up to see what a Dot.

Zero interest in having one of those in my house.

And if I ever had one and heard that random laughter I would've thrown that thing out. LOL

I don't believe that random laughter is by mistake I think it is by design someone having fun with it.

I looked up Captsone Project, too. Interesting, TP! Are you enjoying the project?

I work in IT, and used to work in internet privacy specifically.

I do not allow these devices into my home. lol

I don't like having to use an Alexa. The other projects discussed with our advisor would have been a lot more interesting for me (and not involved having lots of privacy concerns!) and more relevant for a wider variety of employers. Drones, robots, and machine learning would have been a lot of fun. (The upside is that I can still do all of that on my own!)

Alexa is... nothing I ever wanted to have anything to do with. I'm not a fan of smart TVs and other devices like that. The idea of having a device that listens to everything is just creepy.

Alexa would hear silence about 70% of the time, since I'm alone a lot. I still would never choose to use any such device. I guess my home will never be voice activated in any way. Pushing buttons would be fine, but the listening in thing is a no go for me. Back in the day, our baby monitor picked up convos from our neighbours. That bugged me, and 30+ years later I believe it's still an unsolved issue in some monitors AFAIK.

So how come you ended up having to do the Alexa?

I'm with you on Smart TVs, etc.

:D Same here Alexa would be SUPER bored at my house. She'd ask to leave. :D

@CJ2008 I am in a brand new program with only four in the graduating class this year. The advisor discussed options with us and then she made the decision and told us what we would do. The option she chose was the project she wanted. She had planned for us to have lots of help from people on the actual team working on the Alexa but that hasn't happened yet.

I bet you could tell us some stories.
I'm all ears.

In Australia there have been a number of things on a current affairs programs that include people hacking into these types of devices and finding out things like where your valuables are kept, and when you will not or are not home and then breaking into those homes.

And for years baby monitoring cameras and security cameras have been hacked into remotely which allow pedophiles and pedophile groups to watch and sell images of babies and children in people's homes, and allow criminals to monitor when to break into homes as well.

I personally don't care if the govt. has my personal info or traffic and security cameras are watching me, because all those things make our society safer, but having unknown strangers watching you or listening to you that should not be is just blaaaah.

If your phone can record your every move without being turned on, then I don’t believe for second that “Alexa” doesn’t listen unless you use the keyword.
IoT is dangerous. I don’t like or trust any of it.

Wow I dont really know what Alexa is but reading this thread I can say with certainty Alexa is creepy.:knockout: No thanks.

I also don't like Siri. She's creepy too!

Super creepy!!!!!!!

yes definitely super creepy. I was working out chatting on the landline phone but listening to my tidal music from the iPad through my stereo speakers and all of a sudden Siri started talking to me thinking I had asked her a question. WTH?:eek2: I had not turned Siri on and yet she came on and repeated what I was saying as if I had asked her a question. :geek2:
I did not like that. Stop listening to us you creepy computerized devices. :knockout:

However, I cannot imagine more boring conversations than the ones I have hahaha. So maybe listening to these boring convos are their punishment.
