Im from Australia and I work in the tourist industry and I have heard through the years some absolutely funny misconceptions about "The Land Down Under". I thought it would be fun to share some myths and truths about our own countries.

* Kangaroo's don't hop down the street and we don't ride to work or anywhere for that matter in their pouches.

* Australia is a massive country driving from one capital city to another and back again is not a day trip. (The continent is about the same size as the US)

* Driving to the US is not possible... Yes I have heard of Aussies in America being asked this! (Its about a 14hr flight from the east coast of Oz to LA)

* If an Aussie tourist starts talking about Drop Bears laugh at them its utter rubbish!! We dont have giant Koala like animals that drop down from trees and try to eat/attack tourists.
9.gif

* Vegemite doesn't taste like chocolate! If you are offered a blob on the end of a spoon RUN! RUN away!!!
14.gif
Its a very strong and salty and only good in tiny amounts with cheese on toast!

* I don't wrestle crocodiles! Crikey Mate!!! Hahahaha

Thats all I can think of right now.

Its time to share yours!

This is really just about my state...

In Texas, we don''t ride horses everywhere we go. I''ve never owned a horse and only ridden one a couple of times.

We don''t have snow 12 months of the year.

We don''t live in igloos.

We don''t all know how to ski or ice-skate.

You can''t ''drive'' to Vancouver in a day or two from across the country. (We had relatives from Europe visiting us in Toronto who wanted to take a ''quick roadtrip'' through the Rockies...

)

Portugal

No, we don''t always eat fish.

No, we are not part of Spain.

No, Spanish is not the official language.

My FI, being Canadian, has to dispel these stereotypes quite a bit.

Myths about Jamaicans:

No we don''t all smoke Ganja (weed) all day, every day
No we don''t all have dreadlocks...
Hmmm what else? Just because a Jamaican lives in an upscale community, drives a nice car and has nice things, it doesn''t mean they''re a drug dealer

Not all Jamaican''s love beef patties

About the state:

Iowa DOES have cities and most people do NOT live/work on farms.
As a state, people are pretty progressive/liberal, especially when it comes to education.
There are things to do here other than go cow-tipping.*

*No one actually does go cow-tipping...it''s a myth that only a few very, very, very drunk city-born frat boys have tested.

I in fact DID see a kangaroo hopping down the street in Watsonia. We were taking my friends trash out. Vegemite is INDEED horrible. Don''t be tempted to try it. Cute little commercials about how it gives you rosy cheeks though.

I live near Chicago.
1. I don''t know anyone from the Jerry Springer show. They are NOT from here.
2. I don''t know Oprah.
3. Not everyone in America lives in a house like you see on sitcoms. Some of us have very normal size houses.

AprilBaby:
A drop bear is like a koala only bigger and they're meat eaters. They live in the bush and are known to drop from trees and attack tourists and locals alike. Their main habitat is on the eastern side of Australia (it's actually the mascot animal from Bundaburg Rum).

And it's absolute rubbish!!! Its a story Aussie's have made up to tell tourists to scare them, my friend was telling the story to someone in America and another Aussie overheard her and actually walked up and backed up her story!

As for the Kangaroo... thats very unusual and not common place, Ive had touirst dissapointed that they dont hop down the main streets in our capital cities. Although one did escape from the zoo and that was a funny site!

SparklyLibra, I think we forgot some!

How about these myths:

Canadians always say 'eh'.
Canadians always say 'aboot'.
All Canadians love beer and like to hunt.

This is reminding me of the Molson "I AM CANADIAN" rant/commercial. Anyone remember that?

Bwahahaha, I remember those commercials! Funny as they were, they didn''t do anything to dispell the myth that Canadians only care about beer & hockey, lol

Illinois Truths
Not everyone from IL is from Chicago, it can be an insult to say someone is from there.

A lot of people wish that Chicago was not part of Illinois

Al Capone was a 2 bit thug and no I don''t know anyone that is related to anyone he killed.

Not everyone in Chicago has a machine gun but everyone in Chicago needs one if you ask someone from the rest of Illinois

Only about 1/1000th of what you think you know about Abe Lincoln is true.

oh yes the S on the end is silent.
