I was examining my diamond stud earrings with a lighted 20X loupe the other day, when saw something I hadn't noticed before - the girdle on one of the diamonds is frosted, and the other is not!

Huh???

Which is the norm, frosted or unfrosted? And... why?

OOPS - I meant to post this over in Rocky Talky. I've asked the admins to move it but meanwhile... any input is welcome!

Hi there! I'm far from an expert but I had a conversation with Leon when I was setting my warm OMC, and the topic of bruted girdles came up. I believe that when the girdle is frosted as one of yours is, it is referred to as a bruted girdle. My diamond also had that 'frosting', and Leon told me that polishing the girdle (ie removing the 'frost') will deepen the body color of the stone. So I'm guessing the girdles are frosted/bruted to give the diamond a more colorless appearance? It was the first I had heard of all of this, but I found it interesting. :)

Thanks, ksmom - I had a feeling this wasn't a good discovery!

Bruted is usually an older diamond, isn't it? Newer diamonds mostly have polished and faceted girdles now. You can have it polished & faceted but at a loss of weight and sometimes diameter.

It is not an issue. Older stones almost all have bruted girdles, newer have polished almost always. Almost all small stones are bruted.

I am sure you can not pick the difference from a face up view - and if you can it will be because of other proportion issues.
Don't worry =)

Thanks Garry - I needed that! =)

Does anyone know where you can get a bruted girdle diamond polished?
