Found a diamond-----what do you all think??

Okay the trauma from yesterday has passed. New day, new optimism. My jeweler called this morning and has located a possible diamond for me. Here is the specs they gave me via the phone--I am going to see it in person on my lunch break. Wanted to get your opinions BEFORE I go see it

I am told its completely eye clean. I will see for myself in a few hours. So, what do you all think?? My first impression was good based on the specs, of course seeing it will determine the eye clean factor. I really want to hear what you all think. Is this a good option or not?? Thank you!

No Ellen I didn''t get the table measurement. I didn''t even THINK to ask that one. I will find out when I go see it.

mrssalvo--i hear ya on the J. My current radiant is a J and its really white--you would never guess its a J. So I am hoping this stone presents the same as well.

Canuck gal--I asked what the quality of the cut was and was told it was ideal to very good. I haven''t seen the report in person or the stone in person--hopefully I can elaborate further after I see both in person. Is there something specific I should question about the cut?? I am worried now!!

As far as I know there are no "Ideal" designations/standards (yet) for fancies other than Princess''. Here is a old guideline and you can plug in your stats for the oval when you get them:

uh oh--is the wording they used a red flag here?? Sorry, I am overly paranoid after getting a horrid cut on my current diamond. I really want this to be right. When I spoke to the jeweler she was really touting the cut of this stone. Oh she did mention that there is really no bowtie to it at all. Is this possible?? How can I determine the accuracy of the cut?? Is there something on the GIA report? I am a little concerned now. Any advice?

Fancies need to be evaluated with your eyes whereby preference accounts for much of one''s selection..... BTW, there is a wealth of information on the "bow-tie" effect here on PS....just do a search....for eg:

The bottom line is whether or not the stone looks good to your eye, not what''s on the paper. That said, you really need to write down ALL the info on the GIA cert or better yet, have them scan and email it to you so you can post it here for people to see. Also, have them take a photo of the stone and email to you so you can post both here. That will make it easier for folks to weigh in with all the info/facts at hand. I''m not an oval expert but I don''t think ovals have an official "ideal cut" designation, do they?

Hey Hairgirl,

A 2 carat oval is going to show more color than a 2 carat radiant. I couldn't go below G with my oval which sometimes shows more color than my K Round! (And I'm not even that color sensitive)

Echoing what the others said--ovals have to be judged with your eyes. I saw so many number combos when I was looking, and the numbers ultimately didn't mean that much. (There is no "ideal" designation for ovals)

I hope I'm not too late in responding, but make sure you take it outside to view it. You will definitely see light loss in sunlight if it's cut poorly. That is what I did.

eta: also, inclusions can be more visible in ovals of that size--I noticed this in my search, that's why I went with Vs1. The facets are much larger in an oval.

Hi everyone--

Sorry its taken so long to post back. Well, the diamond was a no go. It was eyeclean, almost perfect length to width ratio, but yes, the J color was a little much. If it had been G or H then I would have done the swap. So, back to the drawing board. The search continues! I will post any specs on any other stones they come across. They asked for 2-3 weeks to search for some other options. A BIG THANK YOU to all of you for your help. I really appreciate it!

Oh--and for the whole "ideal" cut they were saying it had--I did ask them about that one and used the advice from mrssalvo about ovals not having an "ideal" cut and they really wouldn''t answer me. Pretty much brushed it under the carpet. Who knows--maybe I misunderstood what she meant. I assumed ideal to mean ideal, but maybe she was telling me it was an ideal cut for me. Who knows!! They were nice and helpful and eager to please. Thankfully it was a total turnaround from yesterday. Thanks again everyone!
