I am looking at a princess cut, and the two common certs are GIA and EGL. However, GIA don''t supply crown height, whereas EGL does.

Of course, i''d prefer to use GIA certs because they are meant to be much more accurate (especially as I am looking in the g/h colour vs2 range- and I definately don''t want an I SI1) but without that crown height information, how can I choose which stones I want to get appriased/checked?

I have strong views on what I would like in a crown height (9-14%), and without that info, there is every chance that I am sending a stone to be appraised that will not meet those standards. In those cases, I am out of pocket for at least $125 appraisal fee and shipping to and from the internet diamond retailer for a stone I would never have chosen to be appraised if I had known the crown height.

So what choice do I have, except to use EGL certs, or find a dealer which offers a ''premium'' service (ie not drop-ship) for a premium price?

Maybe all my reasearch and reading on pricescope is actually costing me money- i wouldn''t have been so critical of crown heights until doing all my reading on here!

Just ask the seller to provide you with an OGI or Sarin analysis for the diamond... Let's hope that those virtual dealers still remember how to pick up a telephone

Yea, we're going to pay for that comment but we're obviously being our cynical little selves so don't take it too seriously

Anyway, practically every one of the major diamond cutters has access to an OGI or Sarin machine and can provide those virtual guys with the crown and pavilion measurments for the stone... On a side note, many of us non-virtual "real" dealers WILL PRICE MATCH those virtual guys stone-per-stone and provide customers with our own analysis of the diamond, detailed clarity photographs AND the OGI / Sarin proportions analysis and PRICE MATCH those virtual puppies at the same time. Yowza that's got to sting those virtual boys a bit - X times the service for the same price

Thanks Nice Ice- but I've noticed that your fancy collection is a lot more limited than your RB's. I presume you won't price match and offer the level of service you say on a stone that is not in your inventory- or can you track the stone down?

On the SARIN or OGI analysis- would the cutters run the stone on request from the virtual retailer? Would it be much harder for them to run a 3-d sarin test (nheeded to get a diamcalc analysis of a princess).

Cheers
