Forbes article: LVMH and lab diamonds.

If LVMH invests $90 million in Burger King, does that automatically make the Whopper a luxury food item? Maybe they are simply hedging their bets. Like investing in oil-giant Saudi Aramco -- plus a little bit of Tesla just in case...

the Whopper a luxury food item?

Wait, it's...not?
In all seriousness, I see your point.
The LGD segment is extremely lucrative right now and gaining market share every day.
The way I see it: DeBeers starting Lightbox was the writing on the wall, so it's really no surprise that luxury groups/investors want to get in on the action in some form or fashion. I'm sure we'll be reading these kinds of articles as commonplace over the near future.

Wonder when we’ll start seeing it in stores…

...for context, this is an investment that is ~ 1/4,000 of the valuation of LVMH -- so it's not like they are going all in.

I see it as a formal validation (yet again) of a product that exists and equals in all of its aesthetics to the natural world. Pandora, to LVMH to red carpet styles, it is a market that is blazing its way through despite zero industry-wide campaigns. It's people making their choice.
