Last weekend we were visiting NY, mostly preparing for the wedding. Before we left, FMIL hands FI and I a check for $5000, and says that I should use part of that money to buy myself a nice piece of jewelry (not to be used for w-bands). I would like to get something that I can wear to my wedding, perhaps a pair of diamond studs, that I''ve been wanting for a while, or maybe a OEC pendant. I''m thinking of spending about $2k.

What would you get? The studs or the pendant?

I am so so so excited!

Wow, does your FI have any brothers?

Oh you are so lucky! FMIL will likely not give me any sort of gift.

With $2,000 you could get some nice diamond studs which you''d wear all the time after the wedding. So really, it''s just pennies a day

It''s an investment, hehe.

Tacori - Lol. No, it''s just him and his older sister :)

Halo - I''m really excited -- but I''m not sure how I''ll ever choose.

I would look to see what is available in OEC pendants and if you don''t find anything you like buy a pair of studs. Either way, you can''t go wrong. I''m sure you will love what ever you get. Lucky lady.

Wow what a generous FMIL! I''d pick earrings. I love diamond studs.

Wow! What a great gift!! I''d choose the earrings personally....But I''d also consider a stacking band

- it wouldn''t be your wedding band like the rules say...hehe

That''s such a nice gift! She''s really asking you to treat yourself.

If you don''t have diamond studs already, I''d get those, as I think every woman should have a pair of great diamond studs! Have FUN choosing!

Wow, what a wonderful gift! Studs are always gorgeous... is that the style of earring you wanted for the wedding anyway?

Oh my goodness, sooo jealous! But awesome for you. You are a lucky girl indeed, not only do you get to marry the man of your dreams, but you get a great MIL too

I would definitely go for the studs, b/c they are such a staple in the jewelry department and can get lots of wear after the wedding. And, if you have $2k to go through, you can definitley get some nice stones that are pretty and sparkly

Have fun with that choice!

I also say the Stud and JACKETS! You can dress the studs up or down!

Well, I guess I am already married anyways

I agree studs with jackets would be a great choice. Or studs with a sapphire drop or something to make the earrings pop more (plus could be your something blue).

That''s a great idea. Totally what I would do. Maybe I should start hinting to my FMIL... (kidding.)

Oh crap, now you''ve all given me even more ideas. I must ponder this further.

Today I just had the idea that perhaps I should go with the insperation-AL type earrings. That way the sparklies can sparkle even more!

Perhaps this weekend FI and I should go look at some OEC/OMC stones. I''ll have see if there are any good places in the bay area.

I know there are a few places in San Francisco, but we won''t be going there until it''s time to pick up our professionally printed DIY invitations

Maybe get the jackets in rose gold with some light pink sapphires to match your e-ring (I know you have pink diamonds but those would probably be too expensive).

. That would be wonderful! So many great ideas -- how will I ever decide??

I like the idea of an OEC pendant.
What a generous FMIL!

I''d choose earrings! That''s a very generous gift.

Wow! What a wonderful gift! I woul be SO conflicted - on one hand a necklace with your dress would look SO gorgeous, and you'' be wearing something your mum-in-law gave you...on the other hand, diamond studs would a staple forever. In a way I''m kinda glad I''m not in your shoes because I''d go crazzzzy! Hehe. I know that wasn''t of much help, but I just wanted to pop in an say you have an awesome MIL :)

Once brooklyngirl decides, I''d love if someone could explain what ''jackets'' and ''OEC'' mean. I dont want to threadjack, so only please answer after her Q is answered!

kama_s - If i decide to go with the diamond studs, I would still wear them to the wedding. I figure it will either be larger earrings, or studs and a solitaire pendant on one of those plastic (?) strings, so that only the sparkly is visible

.

To answer your questions:
OEC stands for old european cut (OMC = old mine cut). These antique cuts, and generally have chunky facets, small tables, and visible culets . The OEC is a round stone, whereas an OMC is more of a cushion shape.

Jackets are detachable halos for studs. It looks like a halo, and is secured to your ear by the stud. Here is an exmple from whiteflash.

Wow--what a generous gift! I''d go with the studs--you could go with something like these:

Sparklies!

and get the diamonds and the settings for around $1500, then have $500 to play with for jackets or drops.

Ooooh, then I would go with studs as well! You have to post what you end up buying, avec pictures!

Thanks for the explanation. I really do need to get in the know, eh?! I wonder if whiteflash ships to Canada...hmmmmm...

How sweet! Wish my MIL was like that (considering we have met only twice, I doubt I will ever get a gift from her---)....

I would get something you can pass down, and wear to the wedding. I like both the earrings or pendant idea---but would DIE for them to be OEC or OMC-

Wow! That''s so awesome! I would get a pendant and some great earrings from WF or something. Maybe like a diamond heart pendant to wear on your wedding day! Have fun shopping!

Wow, that''s very nice! I''d get some studs, but that''s because I''ve always wanted some.

diamond studs.

I emailed WF today about a pair of earrings. I am looking at a couple of .42 stones to be set in either the WF bezel, inspiration-al, or a merge between the two where the stone is set in a bezel, instead of a 4-prong basket. Can''t wait to see what they say

What a great MIL! I have the WF handmade bezel earrings and I LOVE them. I''ll probably wear them on my wedding day. I''m not a dangly earring person, though, so I''m biased! The Inspiration-al earrings are gorgeous if you like danglers!

I can't wait to see what you decide!!! What a fun project.

ETA: I vote for a bezel.
