Hi,

I am interested in a 1.75 ct Fancy Light Yellow cushion cut diamond. The measurements for the stone are as follows:

6.51 x 6.23 x 4.57

Depth is 73.4 %

The stone is GIA graded, but this is the only angles it gave. Do these angles seem good for the size of the diamond.

It is internally flawless. I thought that it would be very cool to own a perfect diamond.

Thanks for responding.

Annette

Those numbers are dimensions, not angles.
Unfortunately no angles are reported by GIA on their reports for colored diamonds.
Also unfortunately, the whole FCD industry gives cut quality and light performance LOW priority compared to the D-Z white diamonds.
When they cut FCDs their priority is to strengthen the color and retain weight.

That said, I have sought out FCDs with both good color AND cut, which makes an FCD search much more difficult and time consuming, and annoying to vendors. :wavey:
They would like to sell every FCD in their inventory and it's not their fault they are rarely cut for good light performance.

Fortunately you are looking at Yellow diamonds, which are more abundant.
That makes it more likely you will stumble upon a well-cut one than if you were shopping for say a red, green, violet, blue or pure orange diamond.

I recommend you get and post a side view pic of the stone.
Our cut experts may be able to make some judgement of the crown and pavilion angles based on a side view pic.
Where they put the girdle is not a precise guarantee of cut quality, but it's something significant.

Basically it's all about where they put the girdle, high, low or just right.
Compare at a zillion side-view pics of all brands of ideal cut round brilliants and you'll notice where they put the girdles does not vary much. That's why we keep seeing angles near 34.7 40.8.

One good sign is the 73% depth means it will almost certainly not window ... unless the shape of the rough caused them to put the girdle ridiculously low.
Again, a side view pic is the next step IMO.

HI Smit,
GIA does not publish Crown and pavilion angles for fancy colored diamonds- or actually any diamonds other than Round Brilliant between D-Z color.
If you have the table measurement we can deduce a bit from that.
If it's a smaller number- say below 65%, it's possible that the diamond has a relatively high crown. Not guaranteed, but more likely.
I think that straight on photos are gong to be the best for overall evaluation.
73.4% depth is not indicative of any problems per se.
Having said that, 73.4% is on the deep side statistically speaking- we can see that the stone has an acceptable size for weight- but not an over sized appearance.

IMO judging cut in Fancy Colored Diamonds is far more complex than simply guessing based on numbers.
Furthermore, different people will prefer different characteristics. This can range form smaller table higher crowns to more shallow, larger tabled stones. There's a range of stones that can reasonably be considered to be well cut.
Therefore its very important that all buyers of FCD's make sure they purchase with a money back guarantee.

Internally flawless is very cool to own Smit!

Do you have any photos to share Smit of the diamond you are considering?

Hi ,

I want to thank you all for your comments. I'm sad to say the stone was reserved before I gathered the infomation i needed to make my decision. Its hard to make a decision in 24 hrs for such a large purchase. I felt reserving the stone was a commitment to buy.

I put in a back-up reserve just in case. Now I'll just put aside diamond buying for a while. Hey. this is stressful.
