After reading that, that doesn''t sound correct. . . . .durrr

Anyway, like everyone here has done, or will do, I am ready to propose. There, I''ve said it!

I have the opportunity to purchase one of two diamonds. . . .

But can I start with my background information?? :)

I am a new poster, who has learned a great deal from this site. Thank you all! My girlfriend of nearly 6 years has been a dream since the first day I met her! We follow the "opposites attract" stereotype to a "T." She has come from a very prim and proper raising. Possibly the most beautiful person inside and out that I have ever had the opportunity to cross paths with! I don''t think that girl ever had a grade below an A- in her entire schooling! Litterally, she is brilliant! tri-sport athlete, honor roll, co-valedictorian, everything. (If I mis-spelled valedictorian, doen''t surprise me!) Loves to dine out, go to plays, concerts, you name it, she loved it. All except cars. Before me, you wouldn''t catch her watching a nascar race or anything on the SPEED channel. Pretty sure she knew how to check her tire pressure, and pump gas, and that was it. Me, on the other hand, has been involved in auto racing, auto mechanics, engine modifying since I could talk. My Dad was an avid car enthusiast and happened to pass that down to me! :) Dressing up for me was washing the grease off my khaki pants, and tucking in my "golf style" shirt. Somehow something turned both our heads in the same direction, could have been the bark from th ''69 GTO judge! We both ran in the same crowd, but had rarely spoken. One night we were taking about different restaurants and I had mentioned I had never been to Ruth Chris steakhouse, nor would I want to spend an entire weeks pay on one dinner. She defended the atmosphere, service, that it was nice to be able to go out somewhere fancy now and again yada yada, and said, "Ok, fine, we will go there and you can see what I mean." We went, and to cut the sappy story in half - have been together ever since!! Like I mentioned, I am an AVID car nut! I have an 06 Vette convert, an 02 Z06, a ''69 GTO judge (all numbers matching!) a ford streetrod, my daily driver of a 3/4 ton GMC sierra crew cab with custom paint (the paint being a gift from her for my b-day) and recently purchased a 05 Mustang gt convert for her. I also HAD a ''67 427 corvette convert with correct numbers which I recently sold to fund this engagement ring project. Sometimes you gotta let a few of the toys go. . . . . :) I love her more than I have ever thought that I would be able to love another person. She makes me complete, whole. She gives me something to look forward to in the morning, and something to look forward to at the end of the day. She is my everything. I couldn''t be more excited to be getting married!

Now, I have the choice of a few stones, one of which I love, but has a few issues. I know a lot of you like to have the dimensional specifications, but I don''t have them on hand.

Stone 1:
9.4 ct emerald cut. length to width ratio 1.4 and a depth of 67.5% girdle med-slightly thick-faceted
H color Vs1 slight flourescence EGL cert (my fav)

Stone 2:
7.89 ct emerald cut. depth is 63.8 but can''t remember anything other than the basics for this one.
I color SI1 no fluor GIA cert''d

I am not going to post the prices, as they are both do-able for me. I don''t want to get flamed for the dollar ammounts! :) Should the EGL cert raise a red flag for me? When we were looking at the stones, the jeweler pointed out that outdoors, and in high school gyms (she coaches jr high basketball on the side) the ring may have a slightly blue cast due to the slight fluor. I know many of you trust GIA hands down, the EGL just makes me worry a little. I had the dimensions memorized, but in the whole scheme of it all, can only remember the depths thinking that was one of the important factors that add to the "sparkle."

Should I be concerned with the slight fluor?

You have the bucks to enjoy things and play it smart. Get both diamonds checked out and get a look at them either side by side or view both on the same day with similar lighting. If it isn''t going to be a total surprise, why not let her select the one she''d like. Both of them are quite large. You might also include a smaller choice of finer color and VS clarity, just in case. If she like''s a Ruth Chris dinner, she might like a little less flash and a little more quality. Although the steaks at that place tend to be big ones they aren''t the 48oz, eat it all and get it for free kind, either. There is a certain level of quality involved over quantity.

Adjust the color and clarity of the EGL diamond down 1 grade and see how it stacks up for value against the GIA diamond. The GIA stone may not be "eye clean" and you should carefully examine it once you have been made completely aware of what inclusions are in the diamond. There''s a 50/50 chance you can see a small mark with your naked eye. It may be okay to you, but it may not be okay with her.

(PS: I''ve been a motorhead all my years, too---motorcycles only however, for me.)

Probably none of the fabulous ladies have responded because they fainted when they got to the part about the two stones size. OMG........Will you ever have a happy fiance with a stone that size. Do keep us updated on your search and it sounds like you and your intended are truly lucky to have each other to complete!

Best wishes and show us the stones please. Many of us will never in our lifetimes be able to afford such incredible sized diamonds.

WOW.........

I hate to rain on the parade here, but are these diamond sizes definitely correct?

I just wonder if he means 0.94 and 0.78.

Nine carats is an awfully large first engagement ring diamond. But if that''s what it really is, then she''s one lucky lady!

Slight fluorescence isn''t going to make a diamond glow like blue kryptonite in a sports hall, don''t worry about that at all. Even medium isn''t very obvious, it''s only when you get to strong that you have to decide whether you like the look or not.

He Sold a
67 427 corvette convert

That's like 65K+ more or less depending on condition.

I am married to a car guy who wishes he had toys like that!!!

Oh, and I think fluorescence is a wonderful thing. as long as the stone doesn't appear milky, I think it is a plus. When you go into black lights, your diamond will glow. Which would be amazing with a 9.4 carat rock!!!!

I would go for the bigger one, btw! :)

If he did get 65K, that''s still not enough to buy the size he''s looking for. For a GIA J graded emerald on a search here, it was 75K for a 8.3 something carat. For an EGL graded J emerald it was about 60K. So, either his jeweler is offering him a great deal, or something''s wrong with this picture. I also have to wonder how many jewelers have diamonds this big lying around. That''s not an everyday purchase for 99% of the people.

Leadfoot, I suggest you definitely get an appraisal whichever stone you choose to make sure it''s not being misrepresented.

Leadfoot, Dave Atlas gave you some great advice. See them side by side. If surprise is not a big deal, do let her choose. I also think it''s a great idea to have a slightly smaller (say 5ct) in the mix with higher color and clarity. See which one speaks to you. Have an independent appraiser check them over and let you know which one is the better deal.

BTW, welcome and congrats. Your FI sounds lovely as do you.

OMG, can her finger hold those puppies up?????? WOW

I love your story, you sound like a very caring boyfriend, really aiming to please your gal.
She is a lucky lady, no matter what size her diamond ends up being.......if she read that story you typed.......wow, huge brownie points!

good luck to you!

Why not send them both to an appraiser and get his opinion? It would be even better if you could go to the appraisor''s and see them both and have the difference explained to you. Don''t forget to take the camera when you go...we''d like to see pictures.

What kind of setting are you considering?

From your description, someone from the girlfriend''s family will put the stone under the loop. Seems they would appreciate and expect finer quality over bling. Go for quality over size.

Thank you for the kind sentiments, and the advice. I do intend on having them both checked out by an independant appraiser. Perhaps Oldminer, you could be of service??? :)

I know to some of you ladies, both stones are gargantuan. I am definitely not one for "trading up," what we end up with is the end-all be-all. She can just grow into the diamond. She already has a very nice collection of jewelry, and this is to be the piece of all pieces! Regarding the mounting, I intend on having one custom made with slim pave melee, possibly one with the 2 bands that join into one. She doens''t want to be involved in the ring process, she just stated that she wanted an emerald or square emerald cut. I''d like to say I know her taste in jewelry, and maybe this is a small "test" to be sure for her, either way, I am confindent in this! :)

Oldminer, I would be right there with you on the bikes, but the lady says that if it doesn''t have 4 wheels and a steering wheel, I should stay far away!

Pinkflamingo, you can''t imagine how hard it was to see my pride and joy drive away in that trailer! But there is always another car out there, not true with the love of your life!

I don''t mean to be rude in any way, and for the record, Silver Bullet was all matching numbers with a complete off body resto, perfect paint, perfect interior. I got a tinch more than 65k. The jeweler I am going through is a recommendation thru her mother. They have been great to their family, and I had spoken to him 6 months prior to diving in to this whole idea. Jewelry in a way is like an old classic muscle car to me. Some people absolutly cannot justify dropping 20,000 on an old beat up chevy nova that is rusting through the floorboards, but for me, and some of the people around me - thats a great deal! With some work, and a ls1 engine, that car could be running in the 8''s easy. Or even for a limited production Vette, but hey they are out there! For me, this ring is just replacing my old pride and joy, it will be that but with a heck of a lot more heart and sentiment.

This entire diamond world is unchartered to me. I can''t begin to tell you how much your advice helps! I was always under assumption that fluorescence was bad, guess now I know it is alright - in moderation! I just jumped the ball and went with what I was presented with, I most likely will have them find a stone with better clarity, and maybe color. From what I read, anything over an F-G is very unnoticeable. This diamond isn''t an investment piece, it will stay on her ring hand and not be in a vault. Investment pieces usually are rounds, and with perfect color and clarity, correct??

I only had a few moments here to post a reply - I can''t do this at home since we live together!

I am planning on visiting my jeweler next week, early. . .I will check to see if he will allow me to photo them. They may look odd on my "Man hands" but we''ll give it a shot!
