First Time Poster, plan on proposing in Sept.

Hi to all Pricescope members
I have been lurking here for a couple of months now, since I plan on proposing to my SO this september, I decided I will wait till August before I start posting, but I have been itching to start the search, cant wait. Anyway I am impressed by how nice and knowledgeable people on this site are, so I hope you can help me with my search, so here goes.

My budget is about $4000, I have known since year 2 of dating her that she wants a Marquise cut. We have been dating for about 6 yrs and I sent her a ring I got off bluenile, the ring has bagguettes (not sure of the spelling) on the sides and she loved it then, see below the one I am really leaning towards. I will love to get both the setting and diamond from one source preferrably James Allen. I welcome any ideas or suggestions, also she wants a ring that will be timesless, she is not the kind of person that buys things ins style. We have been to some B&M stores also, so i have an idea of what she wants. Thanks in Advance.

Congratulations DM, what an exciting time for you both.

Are absolutely sure about the marquise?? I only ask because rounds are about as timeless as you can get and will never go out of style and aren't going to date the setting to a specific period unless you buy a ring that is "in style". That being said a solitaire is also very classic. I like the look of baguette sidestones although I prefer them a bit more narrow without so much metal as the one you have linked. I'll try to find a picture.

Thanks Jay, I know she really wants a Marquise, because of its uniqueness and the fact that its not so common. Any diamond and setting ideas are welcomed.

I personally LOVE Marquise cut center stones, but my mom has 2 huge ones, and I just knew I couldn''t compete, so I went with a very classic round stone...

What size are you thinking of for your center stone? Keep in mind that marquise stones can be really long (N-S), so depending on how big you go, sometimes they look better on thicker bands than the one you posted...just a thought!

I am looking for nothing less than .7 carats, I dont want to go less than a VS2, D - H. I have read here that cut is the most important factor, so I am going with that. Nothing more than 1 carat though, the $4000 budget is for stone and setting.

DM, the search by cut option might help you narrow. Skippy''s post helps to validate the intent of the various scoring. There''s a couple there that fit into your price requirements, and allow you to get both l&w, and also, table requirements. Keeping the default constraints (F - H, VS1 - SI maybe 1) is good. Also, all are JA options...your preference.

As for the setting, I also prefer one with thinner baguettes and less metal, more like this one. There''s one on Blue Nile that I like, but you have to buy both the diamond and the setting there. If you do go with BN, take a look.

I think a good marquise will be a bit tougher to find than a good round, but it will be worth the effort. You know what she wants; at least that''s a starting point!

Thanks for that setting, jstarfire. Her ring size is a 7, so am thinking a thin baguette ring might look small on her. She is 5" 2 and 115 lbs, I wonder how she can be a size 7, but we have tried on some rings already, and she sure is.
