Hello,

I am a first time buyer. I did some research online to various websites, reading everything I thought I needed to know. Over a week or so I narrowed it down to 1 diamond and decided to pull the trigger on it.

https://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut/1.09-carat-f-color-vvs2-clarity-excellent-cut-sku-2459310

One thing that stands out was the crown angle of 35.5 with a 40.6 pavilion angle.

Now I question if it was a good purchase or not..

The ring hasn't moved pass the diamond inspection stage yet. Should I reconsider?

Thank you in advance.

Have you asked for an ideal scope image of it and gemologist review? With the ideal scope image and the numbers from the report people here can help you analyze it.

I will tomorrow morning; looks like they aren't open 24.7 today due to the snow storm.

What??? Are you kidding me??? Someone traded in their black and you found it! That's great!
I dont know what the cost was so I cant tell you if it was a good find or not. You can go on
the BGD website and look up their blacks to compare prices.

Yes, I was surprised when I found it. The cost was for the diamond was $10,250.

Thanks for the idea of comparing with BGD's website. Looking at the prices now and the one I found is significantly priced lower to other diamonds in the BGDs black line.

Then you definitely got lucky! Woot, woot!!!

Awesome, thank you for your reply. Its been a long tiring process but I think I'm pretty happy with this one. These forums really helped me in making a decision. Hopefully my future fiance loves it.

What??? That is CRAZY!!! Definitely an amazing find!! His prices are so much higher that's it's literally like you stole this stone!!

First choice was great, second even better!
Can't understand why this diamond has landed at jamesallen and why first buyer didn't sell it back to Brian Gavin, but you are very lucky!
Congratulations!

Congrats on this find. I'd take the BG Black anyday especially for that price!

I'm quite familiar with the production quality and selection standards for the Black by Brian Gavin Diamond (BBGD) collection. Thus when this thread was brought to my attention and I took a look at the images, I knew there was no way that the 1.182 carat, F-color, VS-1 clarity, AGS Ideal-0 cut diamond referenced above from James Allen was BBGD material.

Obviously this post raises a few red flags, so I reached out to Brian Gavin to find out if he was aware of the situation and he was. There is no record of AGS #104092229001 in their system, he informs me that the diamond has never been in their office for evaluation and it is not their production.

Apparently the mix-up occurred at the AGS Laboratory, they mistakenly inscribed the diamond with the Black by Brian Gavin logo. According to the attached letter that Brian forwarded to me (and gave me permission to post) the inscription has been removed and they have issued an updated lab report.

This is one of those things which illuminates the importance of working with dealers who physically evaluate the diamonds that they sell, before sending them to their clients. Thus, I'm sure that James Allen would have caught this (or perhaps already did) while they were evaluating the diamond.

But it also brings to light, the importance of verifying the characteristics of any diamond that you buy. And in the event that the diamond is a branded diamond and being offered by a vendor other than the designated source, then verify the details with them before you buy.

For example, if you happen to find a James Allen True Hearts diamond listed on any other web site than James Allen, then it makes sense to contact James Allen and ask them to verify the details before buying it. In fact, I'd be inclined to have the diamond shipped to James Allen for verification prior to purchasing it.

The same premise / practice holds true for any other brand, e.g. Brian Gavin, Crafted by Infinity, Good Old Gold, Whiteflash, whoever... Because the person who is most able to verify the validity of a branded diamond is the origin of the brand itself.

Thanks for your reply; I was made aware of this clerical error today. The AGSL updated the report and removed the error.

Todd,
Thank you for the information.
What is the difference in the pictures that made you aware of this error?

Look at the heart in the relative one o'clock position, then look at the other hearts. That's simply not Black.

Sounded too good to be true...I'm sorry travie that it ended up being a mistake.

Yeah it did seem too good to be true. Josh from James Allen contacted me personally about the issue. I'm glad it was bought to light and resolved.

I'm still going through with the purchase and should be receiving it soon. It just made it to the quality stage. Even though it isn't a BBGD I think I'm relatively happy with my choice. I'll post pictures once I get it!
