Hello,

I am a first time buyer of a diamond engagement ring. I like to get an opinion as I don't have much knowledge on this subject.
The stone I looked at is a GIA 1.91 carat, F, VS2, Triple X for $26.2k in NYC. I don't have the GIA number or table or depth measurement off hand.

Is this price reasonable? I am not looking for a killer deal as I understand a dealer has to make a mark up. I just want to protect myself from being taken.

Thank you in advance and I appreciate any comments

I think the price is reasonable just based on the specs provided. We need the table, depth, crown, and pavilion to know more.

$24,800 - 1.91 ct, F, VS2, Triple Ex, HCA not so hot

CharmyPoo, I appreciate your reply.
This is what I was given:

Table: 57
Depth: 62.8
Pavilion 41.4
Pavilion Height 44
Crown Angle 35
Crown Height 15

Thanks again!

The HCA result came back as not so hot.
Selected: 62.8% depth, 57% table, 35° crown angle, 41.4° pavilion angle
The result is for a symmetrical diamond with a medium girdle and very good polish
HCA scores were adjusted Dec. 15, 2001 and Feb. 6, 2003.

Factor: Grade
Light Return: Very Good
Fire: Fair
Scintillation: Fair
Spread or diameter for weight: Very Good
Total Visual Performance 4.9 - Good - Only if price is your main criterion

I would keep looking.

Chrono!

I google and found the HCA calculator - thanks for posting the result.
The seller/shop is an acquaintance of a family member, but I don't know this seller personally.
I would like to give them the business but also want to protect myself that I am getting a fair deal.

Thanks again.

What should I look for in a diamond? I only know of the 4C's, so I am open to all suggestions.
My budget is around $25K for the stone.
Thanks in advance.

Purchasing a stone with a GIA or AGS lab report is the first step. They are the most consistent and accurate labs in the world and the way of knowing exactly what you a purchasing and if you are paying a fair price. Don't let anyone try to convince you that reports are all the same or that you will pay a premium for a GIA or AGS report....it's not true.

Cut is the most important. A well cut stone will provide the amazing sparkle and fire that diamonds are known for. A well cut stone will also look whiter, brighter and larger than an inferior cut. There are ways to determine how well the stone is cut, you already know about the HCA. The HCA should be used as a 'weeding out' tool and not as a selection tool. It will help you immediately dismiss stones that are unlikely to be good performers. Once you have found a stone that the HCA judges to be a good candidate, you should ask for an Ideal scope image. The jeweler you are using likely won't have this tool, but it can be purchased for about $30 I think. The IS image will show you if the diamond has any leakage under the table that will reduce light return. The last tool is your own eye. Ultimately you have to love the stone, regardless of what all the other information is telling you.

Color is subjective, some people feel that lower colored stones have more character. Others prefer an icy white stone. I think that G/H graded stones offer the most value. You will have a very white stone without having to pay the premium for a colorless grade (DEF). Most people will not be able to tell the difference between a F and G when the ring is set...most can't tell the difference side by side unset.

I'm not fussy when it comes to clarity so long as the stone is 'eye clean' meaning that I can't see any inclusions with my naked eye. It means little to me if I can see the inclusion under a loupe. I don't view my diamonds this way so I'd rather not pay a premium for something that I can't see. Generally speaking VS stones will be eye clean, however there is always an exception and the stone should be evaluated by a gemologist. The larger you go in weight that larger the allowable inclusions when graded, color is also a bit more easily detected in larger ct weights, so that is something to consider. Eye clean is sort of subjective as well, there is no definitive definition, so you will need to determine what it means to you and express that with the gemologist helping you evaluate the stone.

I would look for the largest GIA EX EX EX or AGS0 G/VS stone within my budget. This will ensure that you have a very high quality diamond that will appear very white, bright and will out perform the majority of diamonds sold today.
