After months (Years) of procrastination I decided to pull the trigger on an engagement ring. This is my first diamond purchase so I have long since come to the conclusion that I will make a mistake here and there no matter what. I purchased the ring on JA.com after many months of browsing. I had a set of deal breaking/making guidelines which I tried to stay true to while shopping around and overall I think I stayed true to these guidelines. The stone scored 8/8 4/4 7/7 and was a "Great Deal" (1000 below market) on RC. It received a Holloway score of 0.6 Excellent. I know I made some compromises as far as the cut and how it will face up a bit larger while possibly looking a bit darker at close distances. From looking at the images available it seems that the "Real Life" performance will still be good enough to offset any adverse effects due to shallow angles. She will love it no matter what, but what do you think?Link to stone at bottom ...Price was 8260

I can see why you might have selected this, but that 33 degree crown angle is going to be a problem. Low crown angles lead to obstruction, which is when the diamond will go black when examined closely (8 inches). So, it would be a no for me.

'd choose this one all day long. Its a super-ideal, they have a lifetime upgrade policy of 100% of value for $1 more expensive diamond, and customer service is fantastic. Its in the budget.

I'm looking at JA too...

See I told you I would make a mistake! Thanks for the input Salamander. I knew the crown angle was right on the threshold of acceptability going in but couldn't turn down the price for the clarity and color. Hopefully the ring will still look good when she looks at it from 9 inches? I suppose I can always upgrade it if its too dark.

From JA.

If you drop to H in color, this is bigger and has solid numbers.

I like that this AGS and the color looks good. Great numbers. Little variability in the lower (blue triangle between the arrows), but it is still nice. The WF is still my top choice.

If you are open to H color, which is fine for me personally, this is nice. A bit more, so not sure if this work. https://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut-loose-diamond-4060825.htm

She and lots others will look at it closer than 9". So, I would just return yours to JA and pick another. Or, get a refund and go with WF. You can get this sorted now. A 33 will be an obstruction issue. Looking for Gary's gif to show you what I mean...

Do you have confidence that you’ll be able to evaluate the stone properly? Especially with nothing for comparison? I would not trust my eye balls alone to such a judgement ... so I’m hoping that you know something that I don’t ....

No I will likely have it looked at by someone who knows better than I..but I have a feeling that if there is something major off about the stone I'll be able to tell. I'll have it looked at regardless.

I noticed when using facetware that until the incorporation of the star length parameter the cut was classified as very good..graduating to excellent after the 45% star length was input into the equation..The stone seems to be right in the threshold of ideal cut in most tables ...but the tables I have seen all seem to use a 55 or 50 star length. Would i be correct in assuming that having a 45 star length would have the same positive effect on cut classification in these tables as it did using the facetware application..The HCS at .6 puts it in TIC range..but I understand the potential shortcomings I may see up close.
