I found this stone on Ebay, sold to me as a I-J, SI2 stone. Measures 7mm in diameter. I think the pattern is nice, but is it an OEC or a transitional? I want to take it out of the current setting and do a much more delicate setting. I was finally able to get some pictures under a loupe!

It strikes me as transitional too but I guess it could be late OEC. Regardless the patterning looks great! Awesome find!

Yummy.

The term "transitional" is a real catch all. There isn't really a set definition. Well, all the labels we use for old cuts are sort of imprecise :cheeky: But, I do think that the label transitional fits here (as much as it fits any stone): longer lower halves, larger table, likely a shallower crown than older styles, very good optical symmetry. I like it a lot. This is a flavour of old cut I really enjoy!

it looks like a tranny to me...

I am on a hunt for two more right now - and it is a challenge to hunt them down as the term is used quite loosely

can we see a side or profile view??

my understanding is that as OEC diamonds were cut from a single piece - they have taller crowns

as opposed to the period when Transitionals were cut - when two stones were cut from the one piece of rough (like modern RBs) - creating lower crowns

what ever it is - I love it!!

FWIW...

I have been using this sketch I made taken from EGL reports that had stones classified as OECs and Transitionals to eliminate certain stones on my hunt

(more to remind me of what the stone I am trying to match up to looks like than anything else - if I look under my loupe again - I will go loopy!!)

as Dreamer has mentioned - there does not seem to be any hard and fast rule - I just use this as a guide

I think it is absolutely gorgeous - and yes, I would call it a transitional. The symmetry is so good, and has that lovely checkerboardish, crisp faceting.

This type of patterning really appeals to me. I think it is a transitional too, with the larger table, smaller cut, and very precise faceting.

Regardless of its pedigree, you found a beautiful diamond!!

I like the diagram heliotrope posted - very helpful!

Wow, it's gorgeous! Also agree that it looks like a tranny. Are you happy with it?

It looks transitional for me, anyway, I love the glittering and compact facets. ;)

it seems more like a transitional. OECs tend to have smaller table facets.

Love the pattern, very appealing! Trannies are so cool.

Edited to add-Starburst your EC ering is one of my favorites on here! So unique-right up my alley. I'm a step cut girl and love diamonds with a twist. I would so buy that stone if I ever find one like it :lickout:

Thank you everybody! I really love the pattern, it's always nice when an ebay find turns out better than your expectations!

Dreamer_D - your ring is 1 of my ultimate dream rings!!!

heliotrope - the cutting method you mentioned makes a lot of sense! Thank you for the illustration! I'll try to post a side view soon.

Laila619 - I am really happy with it. It was hard to tell from Ebay photos at first, but I definitely love the facet pattern in person.

woofmama - thank you so much! I'm definitely a step cut girl, but there's something about an OEC/OMC/tranny that is so appealing to me!

Well I had the stone taken out of its setting and here are some new pics!! It looks much whiter now that it's out of the setting.

Amazing diamond! I love it. What is the plan for the stone?

And thanks for the compliment about my ring  It is my dream ring too.

Beautiful! Can't wait to see how you set it.

Gorgeous diamond! One of my favorite types of cut.

Mmmm chunky chunky chunky!!!!

I think it looks great! Really white, what a nice surprise. I see it has a little mouse bite (I think), did your jeweller say anything about it?

It's lovely and really looks far nicer. Isn't it strange though ... do you find that the diamond looks better set?

I have a tranny that looks amazing when set ... I was surprised that it doesn't look as good unset but I pop it in the old setting and bam .. beautiful again.

Gorgeous diamond starburst! I cannot wait to see what setting you choose for it!

Yummy tranny! Some people may consider anything not MRB as OEC  looks beautiful and white! What setting plans do you have?

Beautiful diamond    How do you plan to set it?

Dreamer_D, GemFever, missy, pandabee, starburl78, not sure how I want to set it yet. Possibly a vintage bezel, something like this. I'm still deciding. Suggestions? I just lurrrve Dreamer's ring, but after seeing hers, I feel like only a bigger OEC will do!
maccers, my jeweler noticed a small chip when it was still in the setting. It's confirmed of course now that the stone is loose. I'm thinking about sending the stone off to get it certified, I haven't looked into the costs or anything. Do you guys think it's worth it?
Charmypoo, I wasn't crazy about the setting it came in, a little too masculine for me. I think she'll look really good in something more delicate
