Hi folks, found a 4 year old used ring for $12k, and I wanted to verify if this is a ripoff. She wants a used ring for ethical/environmental reasons, so it's been difficult finding something, vs making something custom :roll2: I tried making a similar ring on BN and JA with similar specs, but prices varied wildly by a few thousand.

Platinum setting with 2 tapered baguettes. Not sure what the ctw is, but the center stone is 2.03 carats. Last pic is zoomed in 40x under low light. Please advise, even with a FMV for used, or a ballpark figure. Thank you.

Thanks for replying. Why?

Too many negatives about this stone...
Not a well cut stone.
Clouds are not shown.
Do you know if the stone have any chips?

Thanks for your comment. Aside from the GIA report, I'm not sure. The seller said it was in near perfect condition, and didn't mention any chips. I am assuming it is.

I was also really concerned about how eye-clean it was, due to the SI2 clarity, and he said it was.

Forgive my ignorance, but why isn't it a well cut stone? I thought an "excellent cut" rating gave it pretty decent specs?

An SI2 with that many crystals would have me running. The cutter wanted to make sure they hit that 2ct mark so they cut it deep

If you’re looking in the second hand market for ethical reason I’d suggest sites like Jewels by Erica Grace if she’s open to older cuts. Or Loupetroop where a lot of Pricescopers sell their personal collection at very fair prices and the diamonds are often some of the best since we are such a picky bunch lol.

If I were in the market right now I’d get this is a heartbeat

My gut feeling was hesitant to pull the trigger on purchasing this ring, so I appreciate everyone's input.

She is open to older cuts. Is Jewels by Grace pretty fairly priced? How's their customer service?

I'll check out Loupetroop, thank you. Hah, picky bunch, she's really picky too, so this has been an ordeal.

Definitely do not buy this. The stone is not well cut at all (GIA XXX doesn't mean its well cut, unfortunately). JbG is expensive, but in a fair way (e.g. you get what you pay for). I haven't worked with her before, but have heard positive things.

Is she open to an antique cut stone? What style does she like? What is your budget? We are happy to help, but need info about her/your preferences :)

Ahh, I see. I've been doing a lot of reading/research/learning, but I didn't realize that, and have been going off the GIA/AGS reports. Thanks for your help!

I think she'd like a round, or OEC diamond. She is petite and has small hands, finger size is 3.5(?), so something between 1.5-2 carats. Solitaire, or a large center stone with small stone accents (like the one posted). Budget is $10k-$12k(?). Open to suggestions, thank you very much for your help!

Has she tried on stones? 1.5-2ct will look super big on such small fingers (obviously most of us love big haha, but just wnt to make sure she's comfortable with it!)

No idea how she feels about warmer stones, but this is a nice one. Has good transitional/antique faceting and a nice setting. Can't access the GIA report right now because for some reason it won't load, but OECs largely need to be purchased based on what your eye prefers (rather than traditional rounds where the numbers and specs tell a lot).

Another nice choice

No clue if either one of you are open to a bezel, but brian gavin cuts some of the best diamonds in the world, and james mayer is an artist, so this is an incredible combo

Another solitaire option:

Another warm diamond option with transitional faceting (rather than OEC). I LOVE transitional diamonds even more than OECs, but it's a personal preference. I also love this setting because it's a solitaire but with details

Says "on hold" but no harm asking about it if either of you like it

The diamond reminds me of the one I’m currently upgrading. It’s GIA Ex cut with similarly deep proportions that are very much out of favour on PS. However, to my non-expert eye it’s bright and sparkly and I wouldn’t discount it for it’s cut if it’s nice in person.

The reason why I’m upgrading my current diamond is that similarly to the one above it‘s very included. It sort of looks eye-clean in some lights but in others the inclusions make it all cloudy. There’s definitely no mistaking an SI2 for a VVS stone. The same goes for my SI earrings.

Another thing that bugs me is the tint. My earrings are I’s and my engagement ring is a J. If you’re colour sensitive, then looking at a slight angle the tint is obvious.

I can’t comment on pricing as I’m over in London but I’d definitely be looking for a better quality diamond and check out some big auction houses like Christie’. They often auction off stunning jewellery.

Thank you! I really like the 2nd and 4th ones. Which do you What do you think about this one:

I really like that one too. Is it vintage? I've never heard of this website before. I'm definitely going to check it out. Thank you.

Those are some solid points. Thanks, I'll keep them in mind.

Yes, vintage / pre loved. It’s a really nice diamond AND setting for the money.
Ivy & Rose have a nice selection of vintage jewellery, vintage loose diamonds and they also make a fabulous range of settings in the Art Nouveau style.
They are also reputable. Many of us here (I’ve done 3 purchases and I’m in Australia) have happily bought from them. They are in Chicago.

@TacomaTRD - I’m not as skilled as the other posters here but just wanted to say that you’re getting excellent advice and suggestions! And going preloved is a great idea for many reasons. And I love that you’re listening to your GF and going that route!

That last one from JBG, the Victor Canera / Leon Marge 3 stone, is dreamy. It ticks your 1.5 ct box and is close to the right size, and it is by a high end custom jeweler and comes with a branded diamond. Same quality as a Tiffany or Harry Winston. I cannot imagine getting anything much more “perfect” as far as quality, used. The setting and side stones probably came in around $3500+ new (I had an LM ring, they are expensive). You can research what a similar center stone goes for now to determine if you are getting a good deal. If you really think she wants a round 2 ct though, keep looking!

Vote for the Canera&Mege thing!

I have a Victor Canera Cushion cut ring with very similar specs - 1.553 ct center and J color. It is a beautiful stone. I had Victor set it though, but I have seen wonderful reviews of Leon Mege's work and the ring looks beautiful and timeless.

If she said she wanted round or OEC, I wouldn't get a cushion cut. It will look smaller than a round, and the shape may not be to her liking. The Ivy & Rose option is fabulous.

I saw that they're from Chicago! That's crazy that you've done business with them all the way from Australia. How was their customer service?

I feel appreciate everyone's time, support, and input. Everyone's been indispensable for such an expensive, important purchase. Thank you for your kind words. I just hope she's happy with it...

I thought this one was really pretty too. Center stone is around the smaller end of the spectrum we agreed on, but I think the 1.5 looked nice when we were ring shopping. Idk much about VC/LM, just the little bit I was able to find online. Good to know they're high quality!
